  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Audio and /i Pins Upgrade Program

This is great news! Once again, another reason I put my faith into this company. You guys are true to your word and always have these great little surprises for us that make our cameras more and more attractive. I love my camera!

Tell all your friends...

Jim

Oh I do, even the non-filmmakers are curious, and I don't even own one yet!

Hey Jarred,

I just wanted to clarify then that (for $500?) any owner can send in their camera and get a checkup/overhaul, even after the warranty expires?

That sounds pretty sweet.

Can someone direct me to exactly what the /i pin is and does? Thanks!

ipin refers to Cooke's lens communication system--which includes information from the lens in the camera's recorded metadata. For example, it will record focal length information and iris information for each particular shot, which can then be referred to later if a shot needs to be redone.

its particularly handy for the special effects guys and can be an aid for pulling focus.

RED licensed this from Cooke--the RED and Cooke lenses are both i compatible.

and meant to say--

Thanks RED!! especially re: the audio boards!!

Many thanks, this is upgrade is awsome! I'm very impressed.

As a european, I absolutly second Josch's post. Maybe you'll find a way to make this change happening somewhere in the EU for your EU clients. It is such a nightmare to send a camera that has already been imported from the states (including tax and VAT) back for service. You need special papers stating it is already imported and will go back to the EU. Quite complicated and costy.

You will make hundrets of Red owners in the EU very happy if their camera can stay in the EU for this upgrade. Ok, if the camera is damaged you probably need to send it back, but if it's the change of the pins and the board maybe this can be handled by a Red technician in the EU.

Hey and thanks for this great offer!

Best,
Sebastian

Maybe RED can hire an office in Europe (if none of the big RED supporters there offer them space in theirs - which is more likely) and send 2~3 RED-Team members qualified to do the upgrades until the production units ship with it installed from the factory...

This would not only save lot of hassles to Euro-RED owners, but it will also save lot's of money to RED (no international shipping & insurance)...

Win-Win situation... :)

EDIT:

If coordinated - they could even go from country to country and get the respective owners to come on a specific day to do the upgrades...

Indeed this would be the best, if it takes longer with a general european office...

What happens if you use the OLD audio cables, with the NEW audio board?

Brent will give the details on the RED European service center as soon they are available. Our goal is to make this as easy on you guys as possible :)

Really great red guys ..but i have just received my camera ?

is there is a chance to keep our place when our number is coming for month or 2 ,3 ? please

We are preparing for the upgrade for the i/pin upgrade program, and this will unfortunately require sending the camera back to RED for installation.

The good news is.. we have taking this opportunity to also redesign the Audio board in parallel, resulting in audio performance that is vastly, vastly, superior.

Wow, great news!

After adding my own phantom power I'm actually getting some good audio right now via mic level. Totally usable for dialog. But I'd love to lose that box.

Thanks for coming through on that one guys!!

OMFG!! This audio revision is an answer to my RED prayers! What a tremendous testament to what makes RED a company quite simply like no other. I'm so excited I can't contain myself!

Thank you, Jim. Thank you, Jarred. And thanks to the tremendous and dedicated folks at RED that restore my faith in the notion of "pursuit of excellence".

I have had an early version of the new audio board in my camera for testing for a few weeks and I am really happy with the improvements. I have used it on real world jobs, I mean people really made commercials with it and it sounds great. I am glad I can talk about it now, it is really impressive. Really clean phantom power now my favorite mic sounds as good as if I did use an MM1, which was my phantom power pre-amp choice previously.

I really appreciate the commitment you folks have to your customers. I feel like I have a commando force hovering over me in a gunship, daring problems to show even the slightest silhouette... nighty-night audio issue. Bag it and tag it! On to the next LZ! You have my thanks, and that of my people. When we bring the camera in, what brand of refreshment would you like?
