  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi !

We are going in the end phase for preparing and testing for a big feature film (9 weeks shooting - 90min. length). So it would be great if anybody can give a feedback how the release build is working.
At the moment I think to shoot on 4k 2:1 as of 16:9 for safety....
Any Feedback from on set working as post production would be helpful....
Plan is to edit then on FCP and do the virtual telecine via Crimson and online on Baselight 8. Goal is 35 Filmout.....

thx a lot....

When prepping the camera yesterday for a feature we found a bug in the speedramping function. Our start frame was 24 and end frame 120fps over a 10 second duration. About 4 seconds into the ramp there was a weird glitch on the monitor that showed up in playback and in the R3d. Also it only showed up to 111fps on the monitor when doing the ramp.
Overall build 16 looks great and functions pretty well but you should do some heavy testing beforehand to see for yourself what works great and what may be a problem on set.

I'm DIT on a feature here in the UK. 6 week shoot 2 weeks in on 2 cameras on build 16 and no firmware problems. I'm also shooting 4K 2:1 with a 2.35 crop in post. FCP - Baselight (fingers crossed for RED filename support for the baselight conform come the edit lock at xmas....)

I'm transcoding to DV prores in Red rushes on set and syncing sound and running drives to London next morning. All departments keeping me busy now they've found my room with al the rushes...

Only annoyance (Still!)is the shutting down when the battery is knocked - I have some old and some new battery plates all of which have now been fixed with Gaffa tape...

Other than that and the rain pretty tickety boo.

Cheers

is crimson working with 16?

Everything's been working fine for me, although I haven't done any unordinary shooting like speed ramps or time-laps. There is no longer a stigma with 16:9 Rainer. You don't have to choose 2:1 because of stability issues.

Thanks guys for your feedback....

That sounds not bad at all.... Yeah for sure we start now first with upgrading our own cams to 16 and will do then two weeks of intensive testing. We spent also a lot of time in the laboratory and in cinemas to see our first tests for this project on the big screen and on baselight. One test with 4k2:1 crop 1,85:1 and today one at 4k2:1 to 2,35:1. Low light is in some conditions hard to deal, but the footage looked really amazing.
Jeff we got today this two V-mount battery mount, we will give a look to this if it meets our requirements... we developed also a 24 to 12V DC/DC converter for 24 volts batteries, but you have to find a battery which delivers the high current, as this converter has a power consumption of 18W. And with all the accessories we have on it like lens control and so on you drive a little more than 100W.....

About 16:9 recording.. it is a hell to change recording format during so big production... we will test it anyway but good to hear that you have good stable results.... I am a security freak.... so it should be really rock solid....

I tested today a small sequence from fcp via crimson with b16 material and it seems to work. So I think it will be the way to go in post when the online comes up because this project will be edited on FCP.

Great times are coming up.... RED gets more and more accepted here in our region, and we do the best we can, that this goes up the way in the future.... so the only thing I can say is that the next project will be shot with a Berlinale Award Winner.... so stay tuned... :)

all the best....

Be interested to know if the dual v lock has better mounts for the batteries to prevent the power downs.

How did your baselight conform go - did you have reel name issues? I understand the baselight only reads 9 digits from the edl.

Jeff we will test the automation conform on baselight on monday or tuesday, will post more then...
Biba hope everything goes well...??? A good DIT before, on and after the shoot let you sleep well... shit, thats my job there :)

Hey, I just wrapped our last feature 2 weeks ago on B16 4k 2:1, 2 camera shoot-everything went really well, no problems at all. Shot a bunch of scenes with a lot of detail-grass... but we exposed well too.

Right now I'm on my 4th Red feature, 4K 16:9, but only day2 so I'll let you know how it goes. So far, day exteriors=no problems at all:). Let me know if you run into any problems, I'd love to know.

Best,

Rainer

Hi,

I work on Baselight, this actually isn't correct. We can accept any number of characters in the Tape Name field of a CMX edl, simply because we know that that field is often "misused" to stick in file paths etc. The whole CMX "standard" is pretty rubbery anyway.. :-)

When prepping the camera yesterday for a feature we found a bug in the speedramping function...

Speedramps should be done in post. Shoot at the maximum frame rate you will need and let the editor ramp it, perfectly timed, later.

We used to go crazy ramping all over the place when 435's came out, but eventually every director we work with got burned by badly-timed in-camera ramps and started doing them in post. On a Red where the 'cost of film' is so minimal there is really no reason to do them on set.

Build 16 does have a nasty spelling mistake. When you try to format a digimag with footage on it, magazine is spelled 'magaine' in the warning.

Been shooting on V3.2.5 for a couple of weeks now any problems we had were easily solved by a good old fashion re-boot. I have been using different cameras and each had their own quirks.

One camera we tested ramping and time laps no problem what so ever with the ramping function always triggered on the correct frame and lasted the duration of the required ramp. Only problem was on play back with this camera it would not play back smoothly as in it appeared to have glitches in the play back as well as distorted colors. Non of this was in the R3Ds though so must have been an in camera play back bug.

On an other camera I was using, once again worked great until the end of the second day shoot when the Red LCD did not react to the camera being turned on. Been working fine all day just seamed to stop working after a tea break at the end of the day. Quick re-boot and re plug of all the cables problem solved.

Another camera we used had monitor issues it would not send a signal to the monitor. We changed cables around and the mon received a picture but the cables worked fine with other cameras, no biggie though. The same camera had power problems, less FW build related but worth while mentioning. As in the Red bat adaptor melted the battery pin hole in which the power spur fits. I will post a separate thread about this with pics, switched to AC no problem. The DP, first and gaff were all laughing at the camera in regards to the power issues and VFR selection in the menus. The DP is highly experienced with many features under his belt and I think... hope that by the end of the day I would have helped to make Red seam more to his liking. If not that would hopefully happen in the grade when he sees the shots really come to life.

End of the day all cameras produced amazing looking footage and absolutely made it worth while using them. Must have a good switched on DIT on set preferably combined as a loader/CA to ensure correct settings and camera handling.

If you're Green/Blue Screening, or have mixed light environments test the post workflow to ensure there are no nasty over saturation or pumpy colours (you can catch them in the grade anyway)

ROFL!

Trust me, we wouldn't waste our time on any set doing speed ramps. We were testing every feature we could before a feature to find any issues, document them and make the camera dept aware of any glitches we found. This was really the only one and since it was in the r3d file we thought others should now too. Doesn't mean it will happen again after the camera is powered down and restarted or that it is just specific to my camera but it did occur and could be a build 16 issue.

Thanks guys for this much feedback.... its a very good input for us to start testing now....
more feedback on codec error issues would be fine, would make the decision for choosing 16x9 or 2x1 a bit easier.....
any heat problems so far? last shots the cams were working fine.....
booting problems? seems that in most cases unplugging all external devices solve the problem or simply starting new, but any harder issues there?

thx a lot
rainer

Have not yet experienced any issues with 16:9 or 2:1 in 3k or 4k no heat issues but I haven't yet shot mid day in the desert. Only thing that was a problem was when trying to record 4k 16:9 footage at a 29.97 time base to drive. An error said that the media was to slow can't remember the exact wording of the error but close enough to that.

No codec errors here with build 16, cameras have no heat problems in european weather on 12+ hours days and we're shooting 16:9 without problems. No to harder booting issues, mostly on a 2nd try the REDs are booting, occasionally I have to put off the external devices.
