thanks.

You position the red bar over the area across the image where you want check focus. Then you click the joy stick.

A line will show up on the bottom of the viewfinder. The line spikes underneath the points on the monitor (or EFV) where the image is in focus.

Honestly, I've never gotten this feature to work very well (sometimes it works well, other times it doesn't seem to work at all).

Hi Kaya,

focus assist works like Harky explained. I found it to be working quite fine in all times I used it, but certain "targets" aren't good focus targets. The peaks are generated by checking for high contrast changes. So if there is no high contrast, then its not sharp - technically wise - its smooth, even in a focus plane... So it works fine on EDGES of objects. Thats where you need to focus on.

The Focus Overlay is meant to show a red outline on the black&white image preview in the LCD/EVF on all edges that seem to be sharp. Usually this is done using a kind of Sobel filter, that generates a "relief" or "outline" image by finding the edges. As explained above, unsharp edges are smooth and will not show up, as well as sharp unicolored areas will feel smooth as well and not show up.

Its pretty identical to e.g. the JVC HD100/200 focus assist. But honestly I like the one from JVC far better, because I can choose the color to be show for the overlay as being either red, green or blue. I am weak on red-green (the common mainly men related eye issue) and so I have most of the time no clue if there is a redish outline at all or not.

Making this color selectable / adjustable is a must. Maybe its there in build 16, which I am not yet using. All I heard so far sounds like its still only red outlines, which leaves me helpless :(

Anyone from RED to verify on this?

Forget the focus assist.

Go into your color menu page and selects edge highlight.

This turns the display black and white (which helps to judge focus) and then puts a red outline around edges that are in focus.

Or use both... what the above post said and focus overlay.

Thank you, I was thinking about this the other day, but had forgotten what menu it was under.
