Hello, I’ve spent my whole Sunday going through forums and Air safety rules and it seems that there is no consensus on the best way to power our Reds. I was thinking to get 4 batteries and I am planning on airplane travel.

I’ve got to this conclusion.

The Red Bricks are really convenient as they work very well with the Redones. But are not very good for traveling. I don’t have any battery yet, so I am starting from scratch. I am quite appealed by the V-mount for several reasons and the weight seems also a good thing for me. I would love to use the Red Cradle, Red Battery Belt Clip and the D-tab on the side of the Battery plate, so for this reason, I don’t think the Atom Bauer are a good match for me. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I came out with these two options: 4 batteries (2 Red Bricks for convenience and 2 IDX for travel)

#1:

RED POWER PACK 1450$
RED CHARGER 550$
IDX ENDURA ELITE 142W (2) 1300$

Total: 3300$

#2:

RED BRICK (2) 900$
IDX ENDURA ELITE 142W (2) 1300$
IDX VL-4S 4 SIMULTANEUS CHARGER 800$

Total: 3000$

It seems that it is OK to travel with 2 Red Bricks in sealed Ziplogs. And it is stated that it is safe to travel with the IDX Enduras because they break apart and are safe for air travel (I still am not sure whether it is OK to check them or you have to carry them with you) So I would be flying with the Two Red Bricks as Carryon and the Enduras either checked or as carry on. Am I missing something?

Option #2 is a little bit cheaper than #1 and even though the total weight of the IDX charger is 3.5 lbs vs the 5 lbs for the 2 Red Chargers, I still think it might me more convenient and handy to have two Red Chargers (option #1).

I was also thinking to buy this:
Red Batteries Hot sawp:

How can I use this with the Red Production Pack? Do I need to get any extra accessory?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

IC.

I have an IDX 4VL charger and with 4 red Bricks I always have enough juice. This includes when we are shooting a lot of 120 fps stuff. I always bring along 2 endura batteries for a Pana 17, and as backups. But I have never used them for the camera.
It is possible that 2 Red Chargers are quicker though.

Is the IDX 4VL too bulky?

I got these http://www.swit.us/s8172s-vmount-bat.html
and their Digital Quad charger instead of the Red Batteries and charger. They split in half and are allowed for AirTravel.
I have an Origo coming to give me battery level indication...

The Swit Batteries seems very interesting. It says Capacity: 80Whx2
Does it mean they are 80Wh or 160Wh? The Endura Elite are 142Wh. So if the Swit are 160 that would make them the best choice, and also cheaper.

Yes they do total 160Wh they label it 80Wh x 2 to make sure Airline security gets it... They give you 5% off on any order over 2000$ and accept the California Sales Tax Exemption Form....
They came recommended to me from a Camera Rental House that found the Red batteries and chargers not fit for the abuse of rental...

That's really good. You pretty much convinced me. Safe for Airplane, more Wh, and cheaper.

So this would be option #3:

S-8172S V-Mount Battery (4) : 1800$
D-3004S Digital Charger: 920$
Discount: -136$
Total: 2584$

I am getting the Origo as well. Now I just need to decided whether I just go only Swit, or I get 2 and 2 so at least I have 2 that have time remaining though the Red.

But that's great suggestion Florian. Thanks a lot.

IC.
