Anyone know if there are any RED One cameras rolling at the Olympics? Obviously not the official line-cut coverage, but perhaps one of the accredited media organisations is shooting some RED?

Just wondering.

I'd love to see more about some of the specialist camera rigs they have for the Olympics. The shot in the diving spring to mind. And there's cameras flying on cables above some events too.

Beijing Olympics is recorded using hundreds of Sony cameras and broadcast using Sony studio systems.
Amazing. I have not seen any other exotic cameras anywhere.
Have you noticed the simultaneous recording at normal speed and in slowmotion by same camera?
And notice the smooth transition from one mode to another, when broadcast.

PS: Pl. see the post from manuelwenger (below) for list of non-Sony cameras at Olympics.

I suppose we could ask stuart about reds in china, right?

Official transmition signal is provided by BOB (Beijing Olympic Broadcasting) and they use among others Sony and Thomson Cameras and HD OB Vans from Alfacam in Belgium (there are 19 OB vans from Belgium here) High Speed Cameras here are mainly LDK 8000 from Thomson and (not seen yet) but it´s said there are some Phantoms here as well.
Haven´t seen a Red here so far, we´re shooting here with D21 and 2 x 416 Plus HS with 150fps. Great Fun, great City, but hot and humid, need to drink a lot of Beijing beer in the evening ;)

On the face of it :)... RED would be a far better companion to the Arri D21 than 16mm film....
OK it only gets to 120 ish frames per second but there is no stock cost penalty in recording the entire duration of the sports event.

Guten Tag Manuel,
good to know D21 was landed in Beijing CHINA during Olymic games, and we are going to do the D21 gig in Shanghai in early October.

Are you shooting HD 444 on board ( Flash Mag ) or Uncomressed Raw 2.8K to an external device ?

Hope to see the uncompressed Flash -mag attached to the cameras to be recorded in uncmpressed Raw 2.8K at IBC 2008.

Cheers,

Stewart

There are several film cameras including ARRI 35 mm cameras, at the Olympics. These are not for live broadcasting, of course.

I understand you are there so I am not doubting what you are saying at all. But its not what is advertised on TV here in Australia and the press release they issued tells a different story also. You seeing any?

Beijing 2008
Beijing opens another new chapter as the first Olympic Games to be broadcast in
high definition. With DVCPRO HD and P2 HD Series as the official video recording
equipment, Panasonic continues to push the boundaries of high definition technology
and provides the official recording format for the Games.

security cameras .. they are everywhere..Thousands of them.. They are all Panasonic.. Plenty of Huge LCD display screens in strategic locations.. They are all Panasonic.. .....Panasonic is an official Olympic partner.. HPX3000 is the official camera, I think.... DVCPRO P2 HD is the official format... (The title "Official" is bought for payment to the Olympic committee, I think)... Sony studio/broadcasting systems and AVID terrabyte NLE editing stations seems to be doing a lot of heavy duty stuff that matters ... damn fog and air pollution and sweltering heat...

Stuart (me) or Stewart ? No, we don't know of any RED-ONE cameras at the Olympics, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were.

As to the Sony comments, I think that although NBC will use XDCAM and other Sony equipment, Panasonic has the bulk of the Olympic image capture and recording business . ... and the super slow motion sequences may be from the i-movix camera.

I see more Sony Cameras than Panasonic ones here, HVX200 is mainly used to get interviews out on the streets as far as i can judge. Still no RED sighting yet. But there are so many different locations, no chance to see them all.

A little off subject, but interesting. My friend was at X-Games recently and showed me some photos of some guys who were doing RED 3D. That's about all I know, pretty cool though.

Yep, I'm trying to look for RED Cameras when I'm in the different venues, but no luck so far. I don't think the BOB use em for their Live Stream and the Journalists don't really care either because the turn around for ITV's and news coverage is very fast over here. No time for renders...

I keep my eyes open....

I thought I saw a Red One at one of the pool events yesterday, and I wasn't going to post a thread about it because I wasn't sure. I was at the dentist and they had a small TV and I thought I saw a Red One on a steadicam, but I couldn't tell for sure.
