Just wanted to let you guys know that we here at Digital Monolith have developed a new Red CF solution. We call it Tycho. It's The Monoliths baby brother. You can offload CF and Red Raid to 2 or 3 easily accessible sata drives. It's a basic computer with 2 Hot Swap Sata drive bays and Sata attached CF adapter for the quickest offload possible. We bundle it with a Red CF offload tool to make it as simple as possible to use. Here are some pictures if you are interested.

Comes with
mATX Case w/450 watt Power Supply
Intel Motherboard
Onboard Graphics
Intel Core 2 2.5 Ghz Processor E7200
2 Gig Ram
160 Gig system HD
2 SATA Hot Swap drive bays
2 500 Gig WD Sata Drives
Sata to CF adapter
Sata host adapter
External Sata Triple interface Drive carrier
Carrying strap
Pelican Case
Keyboard/Mouse
Windows XP Home
ShotPut Red
USB Restore Image

Total $1600

W/ Redcine Support $1700 (optional video card needed)

There is no raid at all. The sata controller has raid (0,1) capabilities, but not needed.

All drives are just one SATA drive. You can put two HD's into the drive bays, and use the external hard drive dock for the 3rd copy. Once done, just take the drive and the dock to whatever computer you want. The plan here is not to use raid functionality. If I'm making 2 or 3 copies, that seems to be good enough for 95% of people. On the plus side, at $90 a pop the 500 gig drives can be used just like tape if you ask me. You should be able to get a couple of days on one drive. Obviously it depends on the amount of footage you are shooting.

No measures need to be taken for raid sets. On the Monolith (our bigger box), we label the drives and the hot swap bays so it's easy to tell which bay to put a specific drive. Our main drive on the Monolith is a Raid 5 set which provides a greater level of redunancy.

Hi, is there is some Red specific functionality here that is not available with proven OTS solutions? I'm wondering why you would make such a machine when there are lots of CF readers, lots of storage solutions, and everything in-between...
Drobo (4 hot-swappable bays and better algorithm than straight raid) plus reader and bridge, or with Synology it's even easier to do CF or drive backups... There are lots of other configurations possible with storage appliances that are proven, cheap, simple, etc.
Just curious why you or anyone would bother...

This is an all in one solution, configured and setup. All someone would need to do is order it, have it shipped, hook up a monitor and turn it on. They are ready to go.

It can hook up to a Red Raid
It can hook up to Red CF
It can hook up to a LTO-3 drive
It can use cheap OTS HD of whatever capacity
It can view clips using RedCine
It can process footage via RedCine
It is very quiet
It has internet capabilities
You could put a NLE on it
You could upgrade the Processor
etc etc etc

I don't really know why I'm even writing this because we might as well let Dell and HP sell all the computers in the world. Are you really happy with the solutions you've gotten from them? How about the support, or the video/film specific knowledge behind the design?

Solution 1 buy all the parts and do it yourself. Est time it's working, if it does at all, 2 weeks.

Solution 2 buy it and turn it on. Est time, overnight shipping.

Some people prefer the second option. They are the ones I want to talk to.

Chris

BTW f drobo

how are it's transfer speeds? say 8 gig CF to one drive? two two drives? and i assume faster with 16gig cards due to card design. and how fast from red drive? I must say i like the idea. Keep up good work.

Drobo, not

Drobo, not

Drobo (4 hot-swappable bays and better algorithm than straight raid) plus reader and bridge

I've owned a Drobo for a couple of months now, and it is
  • a cool idea - you can use drives of different sizes, and upgrade as needed
  • not 100% reliable
  • noisy(ish)
  • burdened with patchy support
  • but most of all: slow like a hibernating turtle
It may have its uses, but video is not one of them.

(BTW: Anyone wants to buy a used Drobo?)

Just to let you know I am able to download a whole 8 gig cf card to 2 drives simultaneously in about 3:15-3:30. Those are minutes. Adding another drive by using the external drive dock(via e-sata) would add a few seconds, but not much. That is with verification turned on.

How's that sound?
