Has anyone put a 10mm or other wide angle lens on a Red at 2K format?
As I heard the resulted image is soft and unusable.
I assume that this is since the 2K has much less resolution than 4K and wide angle lenses are less sharp, or also have less resolution, than other lenses.
However, the result was not usable!!!
Does someone have some thoughts, ideas or first hand experience with this issue.
The lens that was used was a Standard Ziess 10mm. The lens was checked and found in good order also the camera with other lenses, including 12mm, performed good results. I am writing "good" because there was no focus/resolution chart involved and no screening only eye focus by the monitor.
Thanx

I'd say it depends on the lens being used. People have posted stuff taken with the Peleng 8mm lens and that looked great. The term "usable" is pretty flexible. Heck you've got manufacturers making 4mm and 5mm still lenses that are deemed "bad" because of technical reasons and less than optimal image quality, but people are still going to buy them anyway because they want pictures taken with single digit wide angle lenses. I think you might want to take a look at a test with the 10mm lens and see for yourself whether it's usable or not for your needs.

I would run away from 2k if you want resolution (2k X 0.7 = 1.4kdebayer...).

Until now I've not seen anything looking good on a wide screen shot on 2k.

See you.

thanks Patrick
Images you posted look very good

If you want good results at 2k, use a Super 16mm format lens. A 9.5mm Zeiss Super Speed, or a 9.5mm Zeiss Ultra 16 prime will give good results.

And yes, the back focus calibration (I don't like to call it collimation - that's what the collimator does to the light, not the lens) is critical. I think at 9.5mm and f1.2 the depth of focus is around 0.006 mm!

I used a peleng 8mm on a recent telemovie. On the Red 5" Lcd, the image did seem a bit soft on the edges as compared to the 18-50mm Red lens. But once we downverted it to 2K in post, everything looked sharp.

2 K red is okay for close ups. but the (2K) wide shots are not the job red is made for. we shot some food stuff today with 2K and 113 f/s CF cards, it looks good, but it is not the best way to go out for a blu ray release or cinema. so this project here ist a dvd 16:9 in SD, it works pretty well with the 2K slomotion.
(i will have some footage next days on "footage" thread)
and: the final rendered 2K in redcine for exampel pushes the footage in a positive way, it is not so noisy it seems to be.
i use 2K only for details indeed.
all other stuff should be in 4K (but 3K 60f/s look great too).
4K seems to be soft, but as mentioned many times before, there´s no electronic sharpness in red and you can push sharpness in the post as you want, the red 4K footage has great space to satisfy all pixel-and resolution hounds out there...
for high end slowmotion there are more specialized cameras or good old 35mm.
