Hello,

I'm happy to annonce you that the short film "La délogeuse" directed by Julien Rouyet has been selected to the competition of the "Léopard de demain" at the Locarno Film Festival (Switzerland).

The script was great, so I absolutly wanted to shoot this short. Now I hope you will enjoy the picture.

See you in Locarno!

(This short has been shot with Antoine Baumann's RED One 336 during the month of april 08)

How is it projected? 1K video projector?

Hello Miha,

It will be projected in 35mm 1:85 with 2:1 ratio.

Here are the technical data:

Shot on RED336 of Antoine Baumann (Lausanne,Switzerland)
With release build 15
2:1 4k, 25p, 320 ASA and 640 ASA 1/50 (and 1/25 for 2 shots) 5500k
18mm Ultraprime, 50mm Zeiss Planar 2.1, 135mm Zeiss Planar 2.1
Edited in FCP / XML
Conformed and color corrected in Scratch (CosmoDigital Paris)
Export from Scratch to 2k DPX
2k Scann to Lasergraphic (CosmoDigital Paris) on
Kodak 5201 (50 asa Daylight) negative
First we did a one light print and decided to change some lights on 5 shots(Arane-Gulliver Labs in Paris)

The print looks beautifull. Much fewer gain as I expected. 5201 neg gives a nice look to the digital media. NO one can tell it was not film generated except of 2 shots shot with a 360 shutter angle.

We had one problem with the (wanted) burned out high lights that through the 3D lut convert or the film transfert had a slight yellowish look instead of white...

The rest is great (skin tone, details...) and we recovered a lot of details in the high lights thanks to the native R3D support of Scratch.

Hope to have answered your questions.

Good luck... from switzerland too :-D

I'm really looking forward to visit the Locarno Film Festival this year :-)

I'll try to check it out in Locarno.
Why did you not film out in 4K? Too expensive?

... It would have cost (only) 10% more... but the post studio didn't want to work with 60Mb/image size files. It would have taken them more time to do the DPX output...

All "arguable" arguments.

We also where (and still are) limited on budget and it was in my eyes more important to work on a R3D native DI system (Scratch in Paris at that time...) and shoot to 2k, than 4k on any other solutions out there. (wich where not cheaper BTW).

In 2k the definition is still great (huge). As we didn't shoot landscape and other detail hungry footage, 4k would have been an overkill...

My 2 cents.

You can judge yourself on the 35mm projection in Locarno. :-)

CosmoDigital Paris

I am a new comer on Scratch, hope to know how the experience in Paris is..
Good job, Graet to be in the Locarno Film Festival

I have seen the film at Locarno. It looked like 35mm that went through a DI. I did not like the sharpening that was applied. It gave some shots a video look. Why apply sharpening?

Hello Miha,

We didn't apply sharpening. I think you are speaking about the "bath" scene...?

The windows where overexposed and details of the houses, roof and trees where burnt out. In particular one shot we tried to recover all the high light but we should have apply a softer fall off. At the end, on this particularly shot, the high lights didn't look very nice, or put this way, the clipping looked "digital"...

Was that you are talking about?

Did you like the movie?

See you.

Patrick

Hello Miha,

Yes. This is the question to ask. With all the Red hype 4K 3K 3.5K 4.5K ... 5K etc,
Do we have a good script? Do we know what to do with the camera?
And more...
Sorry Offholywood, but I still don't se the Red catch within the industry.
i think many in this forum don't want to see the truth. The camera is not there yet... and maybe will never be due to marketing issues

The scene where I saw it best was in the kitchen. One character wore a black dress. ? The edge between white kitchen and black cloth had a white haloe. Is this not on the 2K data? Film out artifact? Projection artifact?
Projection quality varies in Locarno. Fevi screenings have often (blue) color fringing due to lens or projection booth glass or sideways projection issues.
I liked the film ok. Of the 5 films in that block I liked the first best, the second second best and yours third best.

And the winner is...

And the winner is...

I'm happy to tell you that the short of Julien Rouyet won:

Pardino d’oro for the Best Swiss Short Film

 :usd:

See you.

Patrick
