What do you folks think about the big angenieux 17-80 t2.2 on the RED? I am thinking on putting in an order.

I think you mean the Angenieux 17-80mm T2.2 zoom lens.

I don't have experience of this lens on a RED camera. But one thing I want to mention is that last time I compared, this lens' wide angle end, claims to be 18mm, is quite a bit narrower (in terms of angle of coverage) than an 18mm Zeiss Super Speed prime from the exact same camera position. If the prime is an accurate representation of what an 18mm should be like, the Angenieux should be labeled as 19mm or 20mm. The bulk of the lens is another consideration.

You may want to get more hands on experience yourself.

Having looked at the same lens myself, I just thought I'd remind people that this is a BIG lens, it's 11lbs, and that's going to make handheld/steadicam work VERY difficult.

There isn't a high end magic bullet zoom lens out there that's fast (ie: T2.2) and isn't heavy. (this includes the 15-40 from cooke, which at T2 was very interesting until I spoke with some opps who'd used it handheld).

P.s. If I'm wrong about this, please tell me the lens, and sign me up!

sorry, you are right, i had the 18 in the head from the RED 18-85, and it was late at night. i come from the video world, where you can get very decent zooms with reasonably long ranges. my favorite is the canon 8x5.5, it does not breathe or ramp at all. canon made a variant for super 16mm. I know the 17-80 is big, but it would live on a tripod or dolly. i would have maybe a 20 or so for steadicam shots. i was just hoping someone that worked with it could tell me if that is a good lens or not.

It is excellent glass. We have it in rental. You could always rent one from us or someone else to check out.

where do u go to buy a lens like that? I can't find anywhere that list prices of how much these things cost.

We sell the Angenieux product line.

Was on a shoot yesterday with that lens. I thought it looked and felt great. It is a bit of a beast though. It also squeezed into the end of an mb20. We were shooting 3k so I couldn't tell you anything about vignetting on the wide end at 4k.

I haven't checked the price lately, but I believe the price here in the US is +/- $58,000.

Speaking as a person who does nothing but look at glass ALL DAY, every day, (those of you that know me personally can vouch for that.) I would have to say that the 17-80 is nothing short of premium, superior mechanical and optical quality. The amount of research and design that has gone into this lens justifies it's price tag. Definitely intended for the professional cinematographer.

Matt,
do you know if on the 30-80Rouge, since it has a longer rear element design, will it be able to accept a 2x Extender ?

Simply from looking at it, I can say with confidence that a Century 1.4x or 2x will not have enough clearance. They are already very close with some of the other Optimo lenses. My guess (speculation) is that Angenieux will release their own proprietary extender just as they did with the 24-290mm and 17-80mm.
Unfortunately this would mean a relatively high price tag for an extender.
Especially considering the substantial price difference between the 30-80mm and, say, a 28-76mm

No way will a Century 2x fit on there. The 2x for the 24-290 is one of those pieces of craftsmanship that puts a smile on my face. As long as I don't have to look at the price tag.

Any images from the Optimo 17-80 out there yet? How long has that lens been out?
