  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dear red users,
I am trying to find a way to see on one monitor both the live feed from the camera together with a footage shot that was previously shot, and to put it as an overlay of 50% so that the shots appear as a superimposition.
I need this for shooting a character against green screen while seeing if he matches the background I will have in post.
I was wondering if it might be done straight on my laptop or perhaps there's a way that the monitor set would accept boh the live feed and the laptop.

Any help on this matter would be great,

Thanks a lot,
Oded binnun

Could you not just use an HD/SDI switcher and split screen or use a device that can PIP (picture in picture) like a FOR A piece?

Transvideo Cinemonitor (III, i believe) does overlay, but it's only SD. But it's really easy. You can switch between A-input, B-input, overlay, and freeze-frame. Even though its only SD, it's really effective.

Kind regards,
Kristian Appel

There are HDSDI switchers/mixers that will do a quick overlay - some also have keying. A blackmagic card will do a live key or mix from HDSDI with the blackmagic livekey application. I also used to use a laptop program called "wirecast" for on-set pre-vis, which is actually designed for webcasting, to pull quick keys from the SD split over Firewire, fed out (and converted to firewire by) the DVCAM clamshell. You can also pick up tons of old "junk-sale" type SD mixers with keying and overlay - low-tech but it worked. If you already have a downconverter for a split in your on-set workflow doing the mix quickly in SD for framing can be cost-effective...

In dvgarage's conduit Live you can see a live green screen shot over a photo or video background. I'm not sure how that works with the red footage yet because I don't have my red yet, but with hdv you could check the match immediately, and not as two separate images but as (almost) end result.

Thanks!
Have any idea if the HD link would do also? Cuz with the decklink, you definetly need a MacPro on set....

HD Link

HD Link

Well, HD Link is just a way to convert an SDI-SD or SDI-HD signal to a DVI-D signal for LCD/HDTV monitoring. So, my guess is that's not what you would want.

The only reason you would need a macbook with the decklink is to use blankmagic's live key software. You could try someone else's software like Adobe's Visual Communicator 3 to key your shots. This assumes the software can connect to your capture card and use its inputs and that your capture card can accept the 1080P signal from the camera.

A hardware solution would be Newtek's VideoToaster. Again im not sure if it can accept a 1080P signal.
