Is that the Red? asks a random customer at a
true value store on Ventura... "yes it is"
I reply back as the worker there is trying
to remove the last torx screw from the PL
mount...then in front of my eyes I see the
impossible... Metal of the screwdriver bent
and twisted like taffy and nothing from the
screw..."when you need this done?" asks the
worker... "about an hour ago" I say. we where
running late to the shoot and had to have the Nikon mount on to do the shoot. We where down to the last Screw holding the PL mount on ..SNAP

the second and last bit she had breaks off
into the screw. Funny I didn't swear more
when that happened... but the week of
shooting with kids kept my F-bomb count
low..."So I guess I need a Tap and Die Set" I reply as calmly as possible.
I call the owner of the camera and ask If I
can use a large power drill by one of the
most sensitive parts of his Baby... "It's
your insurance...go ahead" he says kind of
like " Go Ahead, your funeral!"...

the director had moved the car since it was
illegally parked. and was waiting... "great
lets go where late" says the director that
I've never worked with ... and wanted to
work with for a wile... I sadly told him we
where going to be even later...and that we needed
a drill.

"is that sweat?" my roommate asks pointing to
my drenched shirt. My hands clutched on to
the cordless drill dripping in sweat. the
director holding on to the camera right
below it."why Just give me a 435 and a mag
and will shoot this!" jokes the director." I try to explane that
you don't always have to perform a major
Gear surgery every time you shoot with the
red. I use my bisness card to cover up the
sensor to protect it from metal pieces. "lets
scrap this red thing and just shoot on HVX!" he screamed.
Determined to make this work I start up the
Drill. I figure we have wasted all this time if I chicken out just because a peice of gear is getting in the way of what I want to create. I lower the drill very slowly and just as I
make contact the bit flies out of the
screw... theres something that happens upon
relief, like that summer rain that finally breaks
the heat. my eyes relax and open. I am so
happy I don't have to drill a hole in the
camera!

Of course its not over with yet changing
over to Nikon had its own issues. but in the
end we got it working... so we could shoot
Red on a tour bus for 4 nights and 3
concerts...

sometimes its the small things.......

scratching my head wondering just why is it like this with the screws? must be a metal on metal thing with Steel and Aluminum.....something in the future I am sure RED will address...

Why can't Red get the assembly monkeys to not over torque the freaking screws? Find out who is number 27 on the assembly line is and break their hands. If it's a robot, it should be a lot easier to fix.

I left a special note with my RED last time I sent it back, asking them to leave the mount screws loose, after I got it back previously with screws so tight they broke my Torx Driver.

heh heh heh...

an old ironworker saying
"if it dosn't fit....get a bigger hammer"

so been busy...

So first I have no 1st AC no D.i.t. just me and a director (who's also shooting stills on the job). Its a test of the red in very small traveling documentary style environment...(yes this means I acully am carrying gear for those who know I'm usually allergic to physical labor.)

I actually built and tested the camera the night before. By the time I found out I didn't have the #10 Torx driver I needed it was too late to go to a hardware store. Just wasn't in my DP/AC kit...

It was the hardware store on Topanga and Ventura... I think Caroline was the one who helped me...she once helped us get a beach cruiser going...

I ask you guys If you think this camera is rentable... alot of rental houses aren't carrying it. should a renter change mounts?...

I do love the back focus, how easy it is to set... I was afraid it would be a big set up like the red rock... but take your time...and test it with difrent lenses the first time I set it up with a lens that latter I found out couldn't resolve infinity by it self... and the back focus didn't work for the rest of the lenses... I'm very glad my AC kit did have a focus chart and was able to find a tape measure on the road in Vegas...

Ok running out of time... lessons fron the day...

Crazy running around with red hand held sometimes long lenses with no AC during a live show = Back ache... no its not that bad but sometimes the camera seems like dead weight thats not balanced and I'm continually trying different configurations for it...

dam that LCD is bright ... used it to find lenses during show...

really have to plan out battery changes during a live event... losing 90 sec of a key song is about a chorus and a half...

speaking of batterys... just the Ac work of of chargeing 3 cameras 2 Battery powered LED lites, and the data management of still cameras, HVX, and Red... is a bit much for 2 people... something always slips through the cracks...

the moment I got close to the big PA's or speakers ... I got 2 Codec errors on build 16 again to the Red drive... we shooing most of a 90min show so couldn't shoot CF...

very impressed with build 16 low light ability...

Best quote from day 2 ... "this camera is gorgeous!" "I finally saw the light" says the director who has never worked with anything other then film..(of course this is only hours after thinking again we should just get another camera)

oh and living on a tour bus for a few days is a great experience...

heh heh heh...

The problem may be because you use steel screws in aluminium body. Aluminium tends to corrode in contact with steel by production of AL oxide, which seizes the screw. Titanium screws may work better, but can also cause similar problem. I used teflon coating on aluminium threads and it helps a fair bit. Best is hard anodising of the female thread. For Epic, recommend engineering ceramics - low thermal expansion and no seizing up  pricey, tho

Last, but not least, when undoing the screws, first turn them all a tiny fraction, before undoing them completely. This helps relieve the pressure gradually instead of building up on the last screw.

Have fun!
