I just got to use the Red for the first time yesterday with someone who just bought his. Neither of us really know the camera yet but are learning as we go.

After doing a couple test shots in his yard, we brought the footage onto his Mac computer. We had installed the Quicktime codec and the FCP plug in, but when we open the files they look like this attachment here.

However, if I bring them into RedCine they look fine. Is there something I'm missing?

I thought I would be able to shoot, download the footage and import directly to FCP and start editing.

And another question I have is about upgrading to Build 16. We followed all the procedures in the manual and online but when we re-boot the camera it won't read the upgrade. As well, it takes much longer to actually boot up and makes more noise.. the disks sound like they're spinning. ?????

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Looks to me like it was shot in 16x9 what did you shoot in?
4k 2 to 1 or 16x9

We shot in 16x9.

I was under the impression 16:9 and the FCP plugin is still iffy. You would need to convert in RedCine to another format- like ProRes first before going into FCP.

Jase there is nothing to be alarmed about.
QT has had problems working with 16x9 proxys for some time now.
Just recently things have improved with that but are like Noah said ify.

If you want to work in FCP with proxys
for now shoot in 2 to 1 aspect ratio.
If you have shot something you have to work with in FCP
follow Noah's instructions.

It seems like the 16x9 issue is improving but not dependable enough for me to work with 16x9 because so many people are still working with build 15s.

I only shoot in 2 to 1.

Good luck.

This is just a guess -- but were you already at build 15 when you tried to upgrade to 16? Or did you skip a generation?

Yes the camera is build 15 right now and tried to upgrade from there to build 16. But for some reason nothing....

I've tried using the CF cards and the SD card but neither of the work.

??????????????????????????????

Got it... didn't know that before. Thanks. I'll do some tests in 2:1.

Cheers,

Read all the included instructions.

First upgrade to Build 15 2.2.8 -- included with Build 16 download.

Then upgrade to Build 16.

Do a black shading calibration.

Download and install latest versions of all the software tools.

Jase,

The problem you are having with the quicktimes is most likely related to build 15. This is a problem that occurs when shooting 4k 16:9 with build 15 (4k 2:1 does not have this issue with that build). It is fixed in build 16. If you are having problems updating the firmware and have followed the directions precisely, then I would either get a support ticket into Red or call them directly.
