The NEXTO drive is very safe as well. It copies and verifies the data afterwards.

Thanks, Medavoyam.

Can you guys provides links with your suggestions, if you don't mind.

I think we need MAC compatibility as well.

Wow...talking about an opening for RED or a third party to come up with something similar for RED footage...

These seem great, but 160 gig drive? Yikes, that will fill up mighty quickly. Someone needs to come out with one of these with a 500 Gig or more drive and they'd sell a ton for RED field support. I'd get 2.

Anyone hear of anything being developed?

Hi!

Check this:

You can buy just the enclosure, and buy any SATA internal drive you want.

I've only heard good things about Nexto. I'm getting ready to buy one myself (maybe two). The plan is to go with 2 back-up copies on set - but done differently. One through the Macbook Pro, one through the Nexto. I might buy a second Nexto in case the laptop becomes a burden in particular shooting scenarios (or if the Nexto proves to be 100% reliable, I'll leave the laptop home altogether).

These are all currently designed for the 2.5 inch laptop drives, (low power requirements) and max out at 320GB (300 GB usable) right now.

Correct.

300Gb might be enough - the capacity of a RED DRIVE.

If not, one can buy several spare drives and swap them in and out with just one NEXTO enclosure.

Has anyone tried this yet? I wish it was FW rather than USB2...I wish it was Mac formatted rather than FAT32. Oh well...it definitely could be a good and affordable way to back up field footage...

It looks like we are going with two 320GB Nexto drives (backing up each CF card to both Nextos), plus we are bringing a 320GB hyperdrive, just in case there are unforeseen compatibility or software issues with Nexto, our CF cards, and our Mac.

I'll let you guys know how it goes after the shoot.

The hyperdrive colorspace is great.
you can swap out the drives.
320GB isn't necessary.
something's wrong if you've relying on several day's work sitting on this unit.
The device lets you dump off of the CF card, with one or two button pushes, without even leaving the camera. works with Red 8GB cards, not sure about anything bigger. check their site for firmware upgrades for this.

Mark,

In your opinion if you have tried both Nexto and Hyperdrive, which one is 'better'?

Thanks,

Norm

Yeah, backing up 4hrs of CF 4K footage (62 swaps/downloads) does seem pretty excessive for one day's work. Hyperdrive has a 500GB version now. Are Nexto and Hyperdrive's write speeds similar/same?

So how about the new OCZ Core Series Affordable SSD drives? 128GB for $479.

The Nexto is available with no drive installed. So unless I'm missing something, I can put an OCZ SSD in it, and have solid state field storage?

Isn't this what we all want? What's the catch? et cetera

i have both - nexto 2525 & the hyperdrive units ...both have seagates 160gigs ...
the nexto is a 2 step process to back up & verify .. you press button to back up - after it is complete you then remove the CF card and insert it agian and now it will ask if you want to verify - you press button again and it now will verify the data ..
the hyper drive is a one click copy & verify ( if you have your preferences set up for copy & verify)
even with the 2 step process the Nexto is faster provided you catch when it finished the COPY ( guessing approx 20+% faster)
the nexto 2700 is suppose to be even faster then the 2525 ..i have not use the 2700 so i do not know if the verify process is still 2 step or if it can be set it up to copy & verify in the settings/preferences ??

both units had to be sent back when i received them and new units were sent ...both have worked without problems since ... i have 3 8 gig CF cards - under run n gun shooting the Nexto can just barely keep up with the fast pace , the hyperdrive cannot keep up with that pace (using only 3 CF cards) ...

What are you shooting that you are using 3 CF cards that the Nexto or HypeD isn't keeping up with you? Maybe you need a RED-drive...or more cards?

How long does 8gb card take to be copied & verified?

Thanks.

"What are you shooting that you are using 3 CF cards that the Nexto or HypeD isn't keeping up with you? Maybe you need a RED-drive...or more cards?"

this is run n gun street type shooting, the nexto does keep up ...
i want the camera as light as possible = red batt on belt clip , CF cards...

8 gig CF can take 4-7 min to copy and another 4-7 for a FULL verify ( all depends on how many clips ... seems larger clips take less time vs. many smaller clips) ...also forget the partial verify ..so a 8 gig CF card is out of service for at least 8 min ...

i do have the Red hard drive ...
IMO 8 gig cards were a WASTE of my $$ ( this was at the time when 16gigs cards were weeks away - which turned into several months ) ..
and still waiting for 16gig cards ........
