  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Avid... From the idiot's standpoint

i am not in anyway disrespecting the Avid Faithful users. But IMO Apple will significantly improve their system 4K realtime capable with AJA/Matrox hardware acceleration. All these years the personal computers were slow and now they have significantly improved and keep improving. Once All sorted out FCP, Color, Motion, Shake, Soundtrack pro, Compressor and DVD studio pro combined makes FCP an awesome choice. Same goes to Adobe Premiere now. Adobe like Mark Crabtree mentioned also will be a tempting choice.

I don't need or want my Avid to have 4K support necessarily. I like to choose the best tool for the job and I tend to think that Avid Media Composer is the best tool for the narrative editing part, and something like eQ or Smoke is the best tool for the 4K part.

One of the things I feel detracts from FCP for me is that it tries to be all things for all people. Jack of all trades, master of none and all that.

But now when its comes to high end editing esp 2K, 4K, Avid, Discreet and Quantel are the leaders. Out of these three, i only see Discreet ( Autodesk) surviving with it's great software lineup including Lustre.

I don't know anyone who edits in 2K or 4K or really wants to. Even most of the HD projects I've had any involvement with have cut in standard definition (although Avid's DNxHD 36 helps there). If nothing else, there are different disciplines involved in editing and finishing generally, there is certainly room for different systems too.

If Adobe got their act together it would make the decision easier for some people.

Adobe seems to play nice with most hardware and software plugins. If you guys want to improve Adobe Premiere PLEASE file feature requests here: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

It will help if people request certain things, it might help the message sink in.

I'm still unsure why there is this silly AVID - FCP war going on.

Both are great programs, lets not forget that.

We need AVID in the world because it is intrenched in most post houses around the world. POST houses will help our clients accept RED.
Lets all not be one eyed. RED owners need to face the realities of business growth. Beating up AVID is not the answer.

FCP is an awesome tool as well and it got in early with RED. A whole 2 years earlier. Lets give AVID 2 years or at least 1 year and see were they end up.

FCP is my sword of choice and I was trained up in AVID. For me, I don't care which one i use, but at this point in time RED and FCP are working fine.

Everyone should just take a breath and move on.
Next subject.....

Once the R3D SDK is released, everyone wins - you will see much broader support for offline, online, mastering, archive, that fits into workflows of all production types that will go beyond what is possible now with Apple and Assimilate.

Manufacturers will adopt and apply as they have with any camera format and then there will be choice - and everyone will be happy. This is everyone's goal and I know that RED is working hard towards that as well.
