phone - like many others - is subsidized because they make money on the phone contract

then why offer the Touch?

It will still be locked and unable to run on other networks without first jailbreaking the phone (which admittedly is not hard).

But if you just want the features of the touch, go with the touch. It's still less expensive.

any one have a link to where I can read more about this?

so why doesn't someone just buy the iphone for 299.. sign up for the contract.. then immediately dump the contract and pay the $200.00 cancellation of contract fee. save 100.00

Also, if you cancel the contract, within the first I believe 30 days, you are required to return the phone.

HAHAHH SOOOO NOT TRUE. no one would do that. once they sale a product thats it, done deal.

Yes, it is true.
It seems that they won't even cancel it unless you return the phone. Of course, after 30 days, it doesn't really matter one way or the other.

Rumor has it (lots of those of course) that the iPod touch will drop in price some...

People might get away with it, but does Apple care if we use the iPhone with US Cellular?

If not, and you can do it "legally", how much is the monthly plan with them?

Also, what keeps US Cellular from finding out that you are using a hacked iPhone on their network? Do they care either?

Why not just say all of the iPhones can be used on the network of the consumers choice?

How much does T-Mobile charge, and what do you get for your payment?

AT&T are subsidizing every iPhone to the tune of about $325. So a contract free iPhone would cost about $525 if there were such a beast. The contract that AT&T gets you to sign has every legally binding clause they can get in there to make sure you either stick with the contract long enough to make the deal profitable or pay a penalty to keep them from loosing money on the deal.

Phone companies are money grubbing gits that will nickel and dime you into the poor house- but that doesn't mean you should try and get AT&T to pay for more than half the cost of your iPhone and then stick them with the bill. That would mean that you are just as much of a money grubbing git as AT&T... and who want that?

Joseph, if you do plan on unlocking the iPhone and using it on another network (must be GSM) I suggest you go with the original. AT&T has the only GSM 3G network that has extensive deployment in the states, and I also believe that TMO's 3G frequency is not compatible.

I love my touch, and its great to have phone and mp3/videoplayer separated from each other. my moto krzr is enough to make phone calls with...
