Super Talent just launched a new line of SSDs to compete with existing ones. And they're really cheap. Yay, economics.

Here's the NewEgg listings:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ctory=11103&SubCategory=636&SpeTabStoreType=1

A RAID 0 array on 2 of these drives should allow for REDCODE to be written at 100MB/s, the perfect storage solution for EPIC, REDone, and maybe even Scarlet as well.

120GB of RAID 0 storage would be $670, plus the cost of the casing and RAID controler. So, what, $900?
A 240GB RAID 0 drive might be roughly $1200

It's nice to see that SSD competition is forcing the price down so quickly. This is great news for us.

Nice stuff. Very cool to see. Now we can shoot long sweeping aerial shots while doing Mach 2 in a Super Hornet...
So will the Red Flash Drive price nose dive?

Hopefully. I'm not sure if those drives I listed are up to spec with EPIC and REDone's needs, but hopefully.

And personally, for film production I don't care for anything bigger than 120GB RAID 0, even if I'm shooting REDCODE100.
For my peace of mind, I'd prefer to back up footage more often, to multiple drives, than leave all my footage on one hard drive for an entire day of shooting.

120GB of REDCODE100 is about 17 minutes. I'd buy 2 of those drives and swap between them.

Looks like reviews on NewEgg and other sites for this new SuperTalent unit are not good. Speeds are nowhere close to advertised and the drives overheat and die pretty easily.

Heat is not a problem. Is just an invitation to find solutions. Keep them cool and they'll be fine for a long time.

Honestly, I didn't expect drives from a company called "SuperTalent" to be any good, but what this tells me is that we're close to having affordable SSDs. Give it a quarter or two and we'll have SSDs of this capacity and price range that actually perform as advertised.
