Hi

I found out that my Addonics SATA CF reader doesn't read RED CF cards under Windows. I tried Vista and 2003 Server. The SATA bus was in AHCI mode.
The strange thing is that Intel Matrix Storage Manager (the AHCI driver) recognizes the card as CD-ROM drive. But Windows doesn't mount it as a drive.

Other noname CF cards work fine.

The reader does work under Mac OSX on the same computer. You have to boot with the card inserted for it to be recognized though.

I'm currently in contact with Addonics support but they don't seem to have an answer either. And Microsoft wants 450$ before they would even read my support request.:angry01:

I guess I'll just have to go with a FW800 reader then.

I have a couple of the Addonics SATA/CF cards, I will try to test with a RED CF in the near future in Windows and let you know what I find. Don't have Vista available, but should be able to test with XP Pro at least.

Just buy one of their cheap SATA pci or pci-e cards and hook the adapter up to that. You should get better performance. I have several of these adapters and they work well. Hot swap works best with a Silicon Image chipset SATA controller.

Good luck

Chris

Hi Chris

You saved my day. I got an Addonics SATA controller and hotplug works like a charm on OSX.
It still does not work on Vista with the Red CF cards. :angry01:

Good to know I helped out.

As for the Vista support, just make sure you are using the correct driver for the version of Vista you are using. Also there are firmware updates for the cards that update certain capabilities. Just make sure you use what Addonics has on their download pages. Also I've noticed that PCI rather than PCI-e seems to be more compatible. They both give the same speed though. The limiting factor is the read speed of the CF card.

Good Luck,

Chris

Hi Simon,

I've been using the Addonics SATA reader with the RED CF cards and zero problems on my Windows XP system. There are some additional steps that XP requires to use the AHCI hardware:

I just tested it on Windows 2003 server. Here it works as well. I need the tool "USB Savely Remove" to unmount the card. The 8GB transfer speed was 3:12.

I tried it again on Vista. This time I installed USB Savely Remove and it recognized the card. Transfer speed was 3:02 for the 8GB card.
It didn't work without the tool. But 15€ for it are well worth it. Now we just need that QT codec. ;-)
