In order to demonstrate nice footage shot by Red One, I've been trying to figure out some ways. Somewhere in the forum, we talked about using Encore to burn Bluray, but some mentioned that they weren't satisfied with the result, mainly the built in encoder being not so efficient.

Then I realized that I started to see added parameters in Apple Compressor to choose "bluray" as the target of encoding MPEG2. I experimented today to encode 1080p/Prores422HQ clip (RED 4K transcoded with REDCINE to Prores422HQ), then to Compressor with MPEG2 (max 40mbps).
Place that file in Encore and viola! it accepts the file and I was able to burn it to Bluray. The MPEG2 file played awkwardly in Encore but it burnt the disc with no problem and gawd what a difference. With Encore's encoder (Mainconcept) I see so much degradation in resolution, but with Compressor, edges look so much more crisp. Over all picture looks more solid, too. With my Bluray player and 52 inch Sony LCD panel with 1080/24p capability, our dream come true, True 24p display!

Also, our fellow director, Higuchinsky told me that Redcine's QuickTime Prores422HQ output allow you to output 4000 x 2000 resolution, which can be imported to FCP for some panning and zooming effects with extra resolution. I tried it out tonight and it was really nice. Higuchinsky worked on few music video in Japan with this technique and worked out really nice.

Try them out folks!

That's good to know, Kaku. Thank you. That whole Blu-ray disc thing had been eluding me for a while now and I was beginning to wonder.

Thanks to your tip, today I found it easily in the "Settings" window. By clicking the "+" button and then selecting "MPEG-2" from the "File Format" drop down menu in the "Inspector" window. At that point, "Blu-ray" becomes available on the "Stream Usage" drop-down menu.

It's like magic!

Hi
I thought blu ray discs have mpg4 on it, not mpg2...
Why not compress to h.264 ?

The 4000x2000 sounds great in FCP.
Still, u can only output 2K. Hopefully, 4K coming soon.
Anyways, cool info. Thanks.

Compressor only allow you to encode MPEG2 for Bluray at this point, officially,
Bluray supports higher rate MPEG2 AND H.264.

H.264 encoding with Encore shows more jaggies on edge than MPEG2 with Compressor.

It also supports VC-1, based on Microsoft's Windows Media format.
