Greetings.

I uploaded my 1st RED time lapse test to my blog which is ready for viewing.

LINK TO TIME LAPSE POST HERE.

I will continue to update the post with more specific information but I can say I was totally satisfied with how RED performed in the night, virtually no noise. I also posted two stills, one of which I did not touch and the 2nd one I played around with a tiny bit in REDAlert, just to see another look. Sorry for the annoying watermarks.

I really love the texture in those. thats what I like about red more than hd cameras, it has texture to it. other cameras make people look waxy , plastic

Haskell,

are you a fan of hammer horror ? I wonder if its possible to achieve that look with red, ad some grain in post maybe , but push the colours

Thanks guys, yeah the view was ridiculous. I might have continued access to it for documenting the world trade center reconstruction which I also have a time lapse of, it was shot with Peling lens (180 degree) the day before except I made the mistake of falling asleep and when the sun came up it over exposed, still interesting though...I can post if your interested.

The Gothamy look your referring to was actually the way it looked (helps to live in Gotham city), the 2nd image I just bumped some settings in RedAlert, literally opened REDAlert, warmed the color balance, bumped the exposure and ASA I think and thats is all, printed the 4k Tiff. It also helped the storm rolled through, I wish I had rolled off some footage in real time cause I could really use this material, even for a horror film Darkkelt...I will try and re create some older grainier looks but I loved the textures the way they naturally came down the pipe.

I loved the TL. Very nice work. You mentioned that the color correction with done using RedAlert. You created a nice split tone effect. Was this also shot using your Peling Lens? Not sure what that is. What were your settings for the shutter, exposure, filtration, etc.? Someone once gave me a secret about shooting TL during light changes during the day to night. They told me to never make a stop increase or decrease more than 1/10th of a stop from the proceeding frame. I shot a TL sequence from my New York apartment twenty years ago. It went from day to night. My settings for daytime were f11 at 16 ASA all the way down to F1.4 at 500. Which meant that I had to use 500 ASA film and very gently remove and then add filters as the day went by. If the camera was bumped or moved the shot was NG. This was before After Effects. I choose one spot in the shot that was a neutral gray color. Then I would take readings from my spot meter and never made a stop decrease more than a 1/10. The transition was seamless but very time consuming (no pun intended).

I loved your shot. Beautiful composition and color choices. I would love to see more of your work. You have a good eye.

Francis

Haskell, thanks for that image. Just wonderful. I stared at the first one for quite a long time, thinking, as it seems, like other viewers, that this viewpoint is the highpoint of civilization. (Chicago, wait for your new 2000' Spire!)

Anyway, I prefer the 'raw' first foto, as it's more Cabinet Des Dr......and now I want my RED ONE more than ever! I also appreciate you "hands on" posts. Thanks again.

what's holding back?

The big RED apple is waiting for you!

i worked downtown on broad st. several years ago - moved to los angeles - doing vfx - i do the bicoastal thing now... i am about 2 hours from the city now. i must get back.

NYC will always be here when your ready to return Adam.

Thanks for sharing mark...Yes, we dont need wiki to remind us that NYC is the real Gotham.

Taking my wife to see Dark Knight this sunday at iMax, very excited.

Now I am kicking myself in the ass for not rolling off a few frames real time, I want this shot slooooowwwed down. I wonder if there is some way to cheat it in post. Any ideas?

Thanks for the tips and feedback francis, I will say I was lucky to catch this particular spot on this particular gloomy day and I would kill to have had some real time footage. I was using zeiss superspeeds I believe, it was late and I just grabbed the wides lens from the trunk, a 16mm wide open, camera set to 320 asa. I was capturing 1 frame every 16 seconds I believe. Not a Peling. No filtration other then the building had a natural black coat on the outside of the windows worked for me, along with the cloudy sky.

Here was my set up taken from iphone.

This is actually being done rather extensively.

best regards,

P.S. - The shot looks great by the way.

Yes, I found these guys since I was sure ground zero was being covered...I am in working with them now to see if they would be interested in my contribution to project rebirth.

I think the 16mm is a great lens and should be part of a Red package. You made a good choice putting that lens on the camera.

My only suggestion for turning the TL in to a "normal" shot would be pretty funky and a lot of work. Sometimes when I shoot night TL of the stars I find myself duplicating frames in Photoshop or After Effects to give me more screen time. Sometimes to slow the shot down if a slower fps render time does do it. You could try duplicating and put a slow dissolve between the shots. Then render out at a slower fps. You could even try a higher fps. Who knows. The problem will be how to smooth out the jump cuts. The shot looks very stable. Perhaps layering the areas that are moving quickly, i.e. traffic, boats, smoke, clouds. Then use After Effects to track the motion to the next incoming shot. This works for me when there is a gap in the star TL. I create a trajectory from the outgoing to the incoming shot. All of this is a lot of work and will probably look like shit, but who knows? Maybe there is an easier way.

Do you remember what your shutter speed was on your TL? 1/48th? Thanks for posting this shot because seeing great work is always inspirational.
