Greetings

I am looking for some anamorphic glass, not sure where to get started. I really like the results from what I have seen in the Nescafe ad and other music videos here on RedUser.

I am familiar with Anamorphic.biz and trying to save up for a set of his lenses but wanted to reach out here 1st to get some user feedback on other options on the market, a few REDusers have contacted me already and I appreciate that very much.

Lastly what would you recommend in a set, is there a particular year make or model or just "Lomo Anamorphic"

I am thinking 35,50,75,100 for starters. If you have this for sale, please PM me your offer.

Best

I'm fairly certain that ones a Lomo has been rehoused with an anamorphic prism, people dont call it a Lomo. One company that does this is Vantage (i think), and the lenses are called Hawks.

Sorry PerfectOptics but your wrong.

Lomo's are a Russian glass and they indeed use to make anamorphics.

When they stopped production they divided into two camps, one was still in Russia - Elite Optics and the other went to East Germany (now Germany) and that is Vantage with their Hawks.

Both companies continued to make anamorphics and on for example the Hawks, you can actually see that they origin from Lomo's, if you xray them against each other.

Hawks are unquestionable better but also a lot more expensive. Lomo's are the affordable ana's if you can say that. They are very good but used and need TLC.

Just PM me Haskell and I'll help you contact a few people that deal with them.

Actually.....;-) Wierdcrew is right, except for the part about Lomo becoming Optica Elite. There were two companies, Lomo, and Ekran (MKBK). Lomo made the majority of the Soviet cine optics, Ekran made experimental optics and the Soviet "Speeds" commonly refered to (incorrectly) as Lomo's. Ekran became Optica elite, as evidenced by the Ekran 25-80 compact zoom, which is still made by Optica elite (the mark III now I think with a slightly different housing).

The whole history of soviet lenses is somewhat murky, and I have been in touch with folks at both Lomo and Optica Elite, but it's hard to get answers.

Regardless, the Anamorphics are pretty cool.

Cheers,
Nick

I have purchased three russian Lomo anamorphics. 35mm Square front, 50mm round front, and 75mm round front. I would rather have a 35mm round front to match my other two but I got such a great deal on the square front I couldn't pass it up. I read that the 35mm square front actually has less distortion and is slightly favored over the 35mm round front. I hear the 100mm Lomo's are very hard to get right now.
I have just serviced the 75mm from Duclos Lenses and Paul did a great job adding a large focus gear and adjusting it correctly. 35mm and 50mm is on the way and will get the same treatment along with fresh painted markings.
If anyone is looking to sell a 35mm round front or 150mm round front Lomo please contact me as well. weirdcrew, if you know someone willing to sell these lenses for a fair price I would love their contact info.

Thanks guys, this is already very helpful information.

So what is considered a fair price when I am looking on the market. Anamorphic biz has a set of 4 lenses for 17k and change and from what I gather they are worth it but still pricey. Buy from Russia and get cheaper lenses that need servicing, and or Duclos treatment etc bring the price back up.

I would like to act sooner then later if I can as the demand is increasing with RED leaking more numbers on the market.

take a look at this site:
http://www.geocities.com/kinor35/lenses/lens.htm
for info on russian lenses.
You might also look at lomo zooms that accept an anamorphic back like the opf 18-1 or the 15-1 ( I think there's one on ebay right now). The zoom won't give you the same lens flares but will give you the format.

Shane.

Interesting, I am considering a zoom as it maybe the only way for me to get up and runnning now while I continue to search for a proper set. The zooms perform well?

I have a really clean 20-120 (18-1) that looks great, if a little warm compared to the superspeeds. Nick I think had problems getting one that he liked, you might want to ask him his opinion.
It is a huge lens, maybe bigger than the cooke on which it is modeled (copied). I've seen the anamorphic back for it on ebay recently for $1800 but this still needs to be made PL which costs around $250 in russia. The mount on the lens (not the ana adapter ) is interchangeable which makes it a pretty easy switch over to regular PL.

Really depends what kind of shape they are in. My 75mm came from Russia with extremely clean glass,no fungus, and clean exterior and needed about 3 hours labor adjusting the PL Mount. Lens cost me $800.00 service + focus gear cost me about $550.00. Total = $1,350.00

Give or take, if you can find them between $500.00 - $1,500.00 per lens you could make a small set for less than $8,000.00 serviced, re-painted marks and ready to go. Downside, you need to find a reliable source that can get you a good price with nice clean glass and smooth mechanics and you will have to wait to find your specific lenses to finish off your set. For the price break I can wait to find the lenses I want at a fraction of the cost. Anamorphic Biz has amazing lenses ready to go and in the full set so I'm not taking anything away from them. This is just the way I decided to go since I can't afford the alternative. Its more work and more waiting but a hell of a savings.

Try contacting Ken Rich at www.red235.com. He has more Lomos than anyone, possibly more than the Rissuians at this point!

I am pretty sure Anamorphic Biz is Ken Rich/the powerbroker/Cineused.

I Still have 1 lomo 20-120 that I completely took apart, because, really, if you aren't a lens tech, when do you get to disassemble a 35mm zoom lens. It was educational and good clean fun. It's a well made lens. If anyone has complaints about the price of cine zooms, I'll send you pics of the ridiculously complicated machined zoom barrel. What a pain in the ass that must have been.

The biggest issue I have seen with the 20-120 (having owned three) is that it can smash it's self up in shipping. It's about the same size as the 20-100, actually I think I held them up next to each other and they were the same length, and had the same front diameter. Although the russian aluminum cases are fairly tuff, the foam in them is about as hard as particle board. A lot of the primes look like they have been pelted with rocks, but they have just been banging around in their cases.

hi folks...wondering anyone here thoughts or feedback on the lomo 37-140 zoom with anamorphic ...the model number being 35OPF18? I would greatly appreciate it. Best.

I have the OPF 18 which is a 20-120 without the anamorphic back. It's a great lense for the money. The one drawback that it has is the fact that the front element is huge necessitating the use of a 6x6 mattebox. It actually has a macro stage as well, similar to that on a video zoom which is pretty handy.
If you can find it with the anamorphic back for a good price and you know that it's been looked after then I would get it.
Here's the info on it http://www.geocities.com/kinor35/lenses/lenses-zoom/20-120-35opf-18-1.htm
The anamorphic back can be converted to PL, the extenders that sometime come with the lens cannot.
spbsale.com has the PL mount.
