Our next movie is being shot in Vietnam in November which is just on the cusp of the monsoon period and the beginning of their Winter, but its still fairly hot and I have some concerns on how the RED camera will perform with heat and humidity. I have a vision of those still of the camera shooting in Sydney Australia on an average winter day with ice packs on them to keep the camera cool. Any experience on shooting in the Vietnam area would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Ian

What kind of locations? What is your budget?

Aside from heat and moisture, also keep in mind that if you are shooting in jungles during broad daylight, it's very easy to blow out the highlights on a digital camera.

Mainly round the coast. Budget is AUD$2M, we do a number of these low budget films a year using the Pano HVX202 and P2, we get amazing results from that camera and get our investors back their money real fast, but are about to place an order for RED 1 for another project (bigger) and I have started wondering if I might consider doing this project on the RED 1 rather than the P2. Thanks for the response.

Tom, I you are interested in our work our latest movie is up http://www.underaredmoonmovie.com/ where you can subscribe to a series of Podcasts on the making of. There is a technical episode going up in 4 weeks time, but there are already 4 Eps up of a series of 7.
I apologies to the forum for the shameless plug.

Hey we're all a little shameless here. :)

Just out of curiosity, where do you sell these movies to? How do your investors make their money back so fast?

We have connections over there if you need it.

Your script has to be approve, it could take some months for the process.

For real? Ok 'Nam just got wiped off my list of location shoots forever. No one should have to approve of my scripts, f-them. I understand nearly every Vietnam-set film from the U.S. was shot in the Philippines anyways... :sorcerer:

I did a feature shoot with my camera in Thailand last June, which I guess is comparable with Vietnam. It was in the middle of the rainy season, which means lots of different weather types, from blazing sunshine to tropical thunderstorms. Very hot and very wet.

November over here is cooler and dryer though, so perhaps it is cooler in Vietnam as well.

For me it basically came down to having a real good 1st AC. He kept the camera dry with plastic bags, out of the sun and cleaned it every day. My camera never had a problem with the heat or humidity. We had a second camera for a few days that gave a single warning about getting too hot but after letting it cool down it was okay again. Overall I was impressed with how reliable and predictable the camera behaved.

My biggest problem on the set was a digital workstation. Be sure you have a case with a mobile set-up that is battery powered, water-proof, quickly moveable and big and strong enough to make people understand that you are doing something important on the set.

I don't know about the film industry in Vietnam. It might make sense to have some gear and people flown in from Bangkok but let me know if you need any help.

Just a few pictures of the shoot. The first one is of the worst day we had. It basically started raining and didn't stop anymore. The road we were on turned unto a knee-deep river and everybody had to be taken from the location with four-wheel drives and trucks.

Sander, just got back from Bangkok and will be doing a feature movie this year after the script is finalized.

As you may know, we have 3 Reds and another on order. Going over to shoot a feature and commercial in Indonesia end of the month. We set up our Red Post in Malaysia using Scratch. May need your help in Thailand. Lim

Noah,

Unfortunately it's still a closed country.

I hope it will change and soon.

Keep the P2 along for back up or really funky setups. Then you can use the Red without worries.

If you check out in Reduser Groups - Asia, you should find a post about 3 REDS being advertised as based in Vietnam now.
Could be a useful contact for you.

F-them? Are you serious?

I don't know where you are from but I'm sure you have some form of regulation too. Tone down.

Shooting right now in the Melbourne winter and no ice packs here :D

Keeping the camera shaded will be the issue; definitely have cool packs on standby but unless ambient temperature is over 35° or so, I don't think you'll need them as long as you're shaded.
