I keep seeing numerous takes on monitors, limitations, hdi, sdi, 720p, 1080p.

Red should maintain a current webpage that clearly (without 8 million posts) explains the current options for each aspect of the camera, in this case the monitoring options.

I'd like to monitor the shooting in 1080p or better (if possible) on several monitors simultaneously, or at least have that option.

Is this currently available or not?

If not, then why not?

And when will it be available?

if u mean, u want to split the signal out to multiple monitors, u can get an adapter/converter/router that would do that.

u might find cool stuff from "aja" or "blackmagic" or radio shack.

if u want different 1080p streams from ur computer on different monitors. it would be best if u explain a bit what u want to do exactly with these streams, to find a suited solution for u.

All monitoring is at 720p resolution.

A maximum of six copies are available at the same time. RED-EVF, RED-LCD, HDMI and three HD-SDI outputs.

"All monitoring is at 720p resolution. "

Isn't it much easier to maintain focus at a higher resolution?

Is red going to offer 1080p monitoring?

You find a 1080p resolution, battery powered, portable monitor and we can have that discussion... :-)

1080p 16:10 or 16:9 1:1 would be about 32", that would never be portable.
u'll have to be the hulk to consider something like that portable.
it's not even convenient to look at something more than 24"

Stuart,
There are plenty of pro monitors that display center cropped 1:1 pixel 1080p or even pan and scan 1:1pixel for focusing purposes. Red LCD included.
Jacek

center cropped to show portion of the 1080p image means they are not 1080 resolution to start with.

but it wont be that convenient to show a 7" from a 1080p than it would be from 720p.wont it be too small of a portion?

For Framing use scaled.
For focusing use 1:1
For convenience use couch and 50" HDTV(beer included)
That's how pros do it(I hope)

LOL
if they can directly upload the footage to a pc in the editing bay, that would be awesome.

u would be able to do 1080 in a fiber optic area like japan or korea.
i still live in slow bandwidth era.

There are a lot of shooting situations that could benefit from 1080p monitoring. We've been doing a shoot in a theatre for the last 10 days and this would have been great. Two cameras and 24" monitoring, no batteries used all AC power. We found that things can look tack sharp on the 24" 720p monitor, but once the file is brought into Redcine and viewed 1:1, it was possible for the image to be a little soft. In the past we've done this type of shooting with F900's and had full 1080 monitoring, this was the first time we've used our Red in this type of set-up. Don't get me wrong, the footage looks stellar and because of this camera it was a much easier shoot then it has been in the past with the F900's, but I have to disagree with you if you are implying that 1080p monitoring is only worth while if you have a portable, battery powered monitor that you can put on the camera. The JVC 24" is a great 1080p on set monitor, you can't put it on a camera, but it is fairly easy to transport and works wonderfully well for studio and location shooting. So I hope that for these reasons we can open up the discussion. If it can't be done, that's fine, but if it is a possibility in the future, it would be greatly welcomed.

Stuart,
The issue here is about which 1080p field monitor to match the live camera output......or maybe playback of a few fully debayered frames thru RA/RC on a laptop.

One thing regarding on-location playback is a lot of people don't get to see high quality Red footage and I'm thinking a quality monitor on set is a great advertising piece as well as a tool for dops/gaffer/prod etc.

So the questions is......
Is any monitor above 8 bit wasted on the live/playback signals out of the camera?
Would love to get that 10bit Cinetal for playback of fully debayered signal to check problem noise/color artifacts on set also.......I reckon this should be a new job on the DIT's tasklist in future.

Oh, I guess it wasn't a stupid question after all. Huh?

I'd like to hear Red's official position on this.

Can they do it, and will they?
