We shot 4K 2:1 protecting for 2.40. We want to convert the file to 16:9 720p. We can't seem to crop the 2:1 image down to 2.40 to result in a letter-boxed 720p. Has anyone dealt with this one?

Thanks in advance.

Nick.

I'd export a 2K ProRes first, then bring that into a 16:9 720p timeline. Finally add the widescreen filter until you hit your desired aspect ratio. Obviously matted is the only way to go.

Thanks for the reply Noah. I was hoping to get the file right out of RedCine with the matte in place. Any suggestions.

why the double converting?
cant he go 16:9 720p masked from the start.

what happens if he set the file to 2.4 and exported 16:9 720p.wont it automatically add the letterbox, if he doesn't need to change the position of the crop.he said he was protecting while recording.

why do u want 16:9 720p?just curious.

if u still want to play a bit and manipulate the files, don't convert to 720p go the highest u can do ur thing and export later to 720p, in that case u would be using ur nle for the mask.just set the timeline to 2.4 720p and the export to 16:9 720p, and enable (crop/letter-boxing).(that would be 2 times waiting for the files to either save or encode.)

or(this is the stupid way, that's what people do).
set the time line to 16:9 720p import to fit and then add a mask(instead of setting the timeline to 2.4 720p from the start and crop to fit), and then export to 16:9 720p.

Again, I appreciate the response, but I'm looking for a single-step RedCine process for going from 4K 2:1 with 2.40 protected down to a 720p ProRes 16:9 (for fast processing) that already has the matte for 2.40. RedCine should do this, but I cannot find a way how. Anyone?

have u tried that in redcine.

there are no "fast processing" in redcine, but u can if u want deal with tiff sequences as soon as they are made, u don't have to wait until the whole thing is done.(not recommended for u.)

but actually the fastest way would be to skip redcine and work from the qt reference files, into ur nle. and output with the letterbox.

again why the letterbox?

You hit it! Thanks so much. That was exactly what I was looking for. Much appreciated.

Nick.
