  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone here used their Red One for areal work yet?

Specifically stabilized mounts such as Wescam, Spacecam or similar. If yes, what kind of accessories did you use and! can you use the Red Drive? What was your overall impression and are there any specific settings (shutter speeds) that work best.

Much oblidged,
Tobias

I'm planning for the next weeks an aerial work with Peter at Bluesky (www.bluesky.se). Maybe they can help you.

Do not follow our mistake!

Do not follow our mistake!

We had a sceane shot on a csena plane, every time the pilot gave gaz we got missing frames on the hard drive. CF cards probably a better choice since they do not have moving parts that can be influenced by a motors magnetic field or the G power.

hand held chopper

hand held chopper

I just returned last week from a chopper shoot with my RED. No mount, hand held hanging out the side with the door off, RED 18-50mm with screw in pola, shutter between 1/250 and 1/500, RED DRIVE, 4K 2:1 build 15. 2 hours in the air recording around 1 1/2 hours to the RED DRIVE with only one shot that came up with codec errors (heavy contrast shot with fast action). Not too bloody bad. Since were down'rezzing to 1080p i just shot a little wider than normal (10-15%) and we're using 'motion' (i think it is called) to stabilize in post. She absolutely rocked! Low level (20ft) over water at full speed, big banking turns, sweeps, steep dives then pulling up...you name it. I have done probably 100 shoots from choppers and she performed just as good as any other camera i have used. Especially the horrible Varicam i used once, and never never never again.
I know it's not the normal pratice and not recommended by RED and that CF cards and a mount are the way to go, but heh, she worked...extremely well! (By the way, we did have CF cards and a laptop there in case i had the dreaded dropped frames or problems)

CF cards only please no matter what.

Trust me.

Drop frames will happen on the raid.

We have'nt seen a dropped frame yet in the heli using drives. We've shot hours upon hours.
We just stick them in a pelican with foam.

Just shot 2 hours ago handheld from the backseat of a Piper Super Cub float plane, door open - shooting plane to plane footage in Alaska. The Red Drive definitely did not like the experience. As soon as I opened the side door (700' at 96mph) shouldered the rig and pressed record.... BAM "Internal Fault -Recording Error" flashed on screen, and then when it gave me back the GUI screen, I saw the dreaded red numbers indicating dropped frames. Tried again...same thing. Flew back to our little base camp island and swapped out for CF cards, and had no issues whatsoever from that point on, except for shooting 4K 2:1 instead 4K 16:9 Redcode 36

Bottom line seems to be these drives do not like vibration of any kind. Steadicam and handheld no problem, but for our car mounts and future aerial scenes, its going to be CF card from the beginning.

Besides that it was fun times - dive bombed a grizzly bear on the way home.

Regarding bears... a week ago a grizzly bear mauled a 15 year old girl while she was riding her mountain bike in an urban park here in Anchorage. She survived but is in the hospital.

Turns out we are shooting in the same park today, steadicam chase scene through a forest type of deal. Always some trade off, easier load-in, better access, but there are these bloodthirsty bears.....

One of our local production colleagues is apparently bringing his .44 Magnum revolver for bear protection.

Personally I am more concerned about the damn mosquitos and the chromosomal damage all this DEET is doing to me.

Peter Jackson used RED for his aerial work on "Lovely Bones" in New Zealand.

You put a loose Pelican case inside a Wescam?

Hummmm.....

Genius

LOL

Have you seen a Wescam Big.T.?

We had dropped frames with raid drive inside the Wescam on a helicopter.

It was expensive air time "Helicopter in the air".

Don't try it at home kids.

LOL

We just finished shooting the first RED feature (as far as I know) in Thailand. We shot with a Aerial Exposure Gyro Platform on CF cards. I have permission to post footage so I will prepare some and post it later.

DP was Song and as you can see he was taking things rather seriously ;)

Just one thought: if you are shooting on CF cards and downloading them on the way be sure your laptop is more or less vibration free. On my lap worked for me but an external harddisk that I put on the seat next to me more or less refused.

Tek did you nail it down to drive bumps or was it codec errors caused by an overlaod of picture information?
We had similar problems with wescam and problem went away when iris was capped. Open up iris and codec errors reappeared.

We identified a couple of dropped frames via bumping.

Drive is not ideal but still worth considering/testing in the short term if landing isnt an option

Shooting aerials with Red and a drive is very much common sense when it comes to vibration. If it vibrates or bumps, you will get dropped frames and/or codec error. Depending on the mount you use - Wescam, SpaceCam and Stab-C all have a completely stable platform - you can't see any vibration on the picture so a drive will be OK. The only time they aren't is when the particular mount excedes it's capabilities and there is a bump, or high G forces - we have had this once chasing cars at very high speed and the Wescam platform 'toppled' leading to a codec error. The drive allows for massive storage time, but a CF's the safe bet for anything other than a completely stable mount. I just shot a Jaguar commercial on our Wescam RED - stunning images and only the one drop out due to a big bump.
