Also Check out the Q&A section. This section has many of the company owners answering questions on many of the products that we have done reviews on. Please note it is not a chat area and any posts that are not to the point questions will be deleted. The Q&A section has been designed to be an area that helps make getting information and answers on third party accessories easier.

This was the Carrion C model, Finner?

Have you had a chance to try the LSDesigns battery mounts to power the LCD off its own V-mount battery, for instance, or just off A/C?

It is the Carrion B. I have not used the back mounts monitor V mount system but have powered it with a D-tap to 12volt input cable that goes from the battery mounts D-tap to the 12 volt input on the monitor. Luis sells these if you ask for one.

Hi Finner,
Can you tell me if when using DVI you can output HDSDI to another monitor and does it include the menus? I'm correct in saying that when using DVI there is no HDSDI output from the camera yes?

Hi

When you are set on DVI you do get the menu's on the carrion through the HDMI from the camera with a HDMI to DVI cable. However you are correct, When using DVI setting on the camera there is no HDSDI output on the camera.

We have found a work around for this. When the AC needs the menu's to make a change with the camera they will switch to DVI (This looses the HDSDI output to the directors monitor). The AC will then make the camera changes needed and then switch back to HDSDI to get the directors monitor back up. Directors, producers and clients are use to loosing a picture when an AC is making big changes with the camera so this system has not been a problem for us.

Finner, I had seen you around the forums but I was not aware of your reviews until last night. I just wanted to say that I'm impressed with your reviews, I agree whole heartedly with almost all of what you've said so far.

So much so that I took your word for it and just ordered the Carrion LCD monitor.

Keep up the good work man.

Thanks,
Nicholas Evan Vedros

Daren, what if we loop thru from the HD-SDI out from carrion ? Yes we will have the menu, but will it work ?

Thanks for the kind words Nicholas. I am confident you will be very happy with the carrion.

I do not believe the monitor itself supports multiple outs from any input. I think only the HDSDI in will loop to the HDSDI out. This is more of a luis question but I will test it when I get the chance.

Finner - 1 question - Have you looked at the anamorphic mode - will it, in your opinion, provide a "more-or-less" workable anamorphic desqueeze? (I hope so because I've got one on the way). Thx.

No clue on that one James. I have no anamorphic lenses to test it with also. Maybe someone else can answer that one.

We've got the Carrion B here (and it's fantastic, although an AC managed to bust the screen on our last shoot as so sadly we are awaiting a new screen) - Finner's review is spot on, it's a great bit of kit...

We haven't shot anamorphically yet, so can't confirm or deny the quality of the de-squeeze, however for framing rather than focusing requirements I can't think that it won't be good enough to use. For focusing, you don't really need the image de-anamorphicised, so either way, should be fine, I would have thought...

I can, however, confirm that only the HD-SDI loops through, so unfortunately you can't get the menus up on the LCD and loop through to a secondary screen. That said, you can run a separate output from the HD-SDI outs on the camera (there are three if you count the preview out), so I can't see that being a huge challenge either...

All in all, it's a cracking screen, and as far as I'm aware the only currently available 3rd party option that allows you to view the full operators area.

What i meant is the possibility to have HDMI and HD-SDI out at the same time. HDMI output is merely for camera operator and HD-SDI output is what director will see. I called up RED and they confirm it's not a problem. You can view all at the same time, not a problem on build 16 (i don't ask for build 15 so not sure). Thanks for the clarification Jones

no worries - I'll take it on faith. I'm just getting a little tired of framing up super stretchy images is all :)

jtm,

I am very eager to know this info as well. It is the one uncertainty that keeps me from purchasing it right now. When you know for sure if it will desqueeze the ana image or not could you please post here?

Thanks!

This is true that you can get both HDMI and HDSDI off the camera at the same time. When in this mode though the HDMI signal does not transmit the menu options. To get the HDMI to transmit menus you must set the camera to DVI at which point you get info through the HDMI port on the camera but the HDSDI no longer transmits anything.

I hope RED see this thread to have this working for 3rd party stuff. seeing menu thru DVI and can have HD-SDI output at the same time.

Thanks Finner,

I have been watching the development of this for a while over on the steadicam forum. After seei ng your little video I placed an order.

Cheers,

Nick
