Folks,

Thought I might toss this out your way:

http://silverado.cc/shop/product.php?productid=1014&cat=0&page=1

Production stable at 4.19 Ghz and runs very cool with our liquid cooling system. Big thanks to our hardware partners, Digital Storm.

These things are real beasts, but extraordinarily fast. We'll be putting it through its paces tomorrow when we hook up a Dulce PRO RX via PCIe and measure disk speeds with IOmeter. We'll post the IOmeter results once the tests are done.

Best of all--we back it up with a 4-year warranty which I believe is one of the longest coverages available on this class of machine.

These are available to order immediately--they are custom-built upon order and ship within 5-10 business days.

Richard,

Yes--Intel Skulltrail. Took a while to get to this point, but now we have the "recipe" to replicate this config very rapidly.

We're already getting calls from people who want to upgrade from their older CPU's to this new system.

Richard,

We'd be able to give a credit of $250 to international purchasers to help alleviate customs and duties costs.

Hello Torrey,
Your system seems very interesting.
A few questions for You:

1. Did You run prime95 stability test for 24 hours ?
2. What temeratures shows CoreTemp under 100% full load ?
3. What voltage do You see in CPU-Z, in both idle and full load mode ?
4. How many L/h is Your water pump pushing ?

Best Regards

Boba,

Sure...I'd be glad to run a few of those. I'll toss on prime95 right now...

Prime95 is running now in conjunction with CoreTemp. Haven't seen anything spike past 76 C yet on the 100% core.

It shows average temps between 45 to 65 C on the other cores.

prime95 test status...

Five hours in with 100% CPU utilization. Temp has actually gone down to between 41 and 69 C.

Zero errors.

No scratch with it? so it's a computer only? at 17k? if so that is an amazing markup....

This is NOT a comparison BUT an approximation to the raw cost of the most expensive parts in this PC your offering...and I am trying to see how $17k would fly....so I am hoping that your machine INCLUDES a Scratch seat?

Uhhh... and a working production unit is just a Mobo, CPUs, and a graphics card??

Take a real look at the prices based on the specs that are on the web page for this system:
http://silverado.cc/shop/product.php?productid=1014&cat=1&page=1

1x Skulltrail mobo - $700 (shipping, taxes, etc.)
2x Core2 Extreme - $3200
1x NVidia 5600 SDI - $6600

That's $10,500.

1x Thermaltake Tough Power 1200W Power Supply - $400
1x Dominator RAM 4GB - $300
2x 1TB Western Digital 7200RPM drives - $500
Blu-Ray 4X / DVD writer - $500
SoundBlaster XFi Extreme - $160

Up to $12,360.

Add in an OEM install of XP, a Floppy/card digital reader, an extra radiator, all the cooling hardware, the fairly unusual custom case that it's in, and building the unit.

Up to around $13,500.

On top of that, Silverado is offering a 4-YEAR parts and labor warranty and LIFETIME toll-free tech support. Being really really generous, that's worth at least $1,500.

Up to $15,000.

I'm not going to include the many many hours of configuration, testing, planning, and design that went into the unit.

And Silverado still has to run a business and make some money, so they are charging $17,500.

So... that's how 17.5K would fly. :)

Obin,

Do you want SCRATCH or SCRATCH CINE?

If You want the fastest and the most powerful intel system in the world there is a price to pay over the top for this system. If You don't know how to OC and You need the fastest machine this is the way to go.
I am not here to defend Torrey, but they spent many many working hours and money to complete this setup, test it, retest it, ... and You got 4 years of warranty which is unheard of for an OC'd system.

Thanks for posting Torrey. Great work pushing the envelope to bring a great companion tool to the market place to process RED footage!

Do you have comparison processing times for 4K?

Apple G-5 v.s. your new system?

Cheers

Torrey,
thank You very much for an extensive info.
The 76 C peak loads are just a little bit higher than it should be for a 24/7 - 4 years system. Try to keep it at around 72 C.
But, when using Scratch You'll never reach that cpu load and usage.

I guess that Your FSB is 419 Mhz, and Your multi is 10x, therefore You had to raise the Voltages on the CPUs.
Depending on the stepping of the cpu (C0,C1) and a concrete CPU sample You have, the thermal and power characteristics can't be the same through the hole production line.

You have to closely watch that raised Voltages, and Vdrop on a full load.

Although 4.0 GHz is easy to setup, every raise above it (4.2Ghz and above) requires serious awareness, and extra system cooling, in this case cooling of North Bridge and Mosfets. And Voltage of close to 1.4 or more as You go past 4.0 ghz.

Not all capacitors on Intel D5400 motherboard are best quality,
and many of them are not full solid type.

Raising CPU Voltages in general, and keeping it for a long time 24/7, means that Cpus will after some time ask for a more voltage increase, and again after some time for a more ...

I would friendly recommend to keep it at 10x400 on Water cooling as a truly stable and risk free production model.

Even Dell has recently changed (downclocked) specification of several of their overclocked high end systems, because they couldn't have on every cpu unit the same speed and characteristics, and after a few months there were some problems with stability, because Voltages were set too high for that long period of work.

Best Regards

Dave,

We are outputting 1/2 res. full quality from 4k 16:9 files in real time. Essentially, real-time HD dailies with no dropped frames.

We haven't done extensive processing yet since we are awaiting our RAID to arrive so we can do some DPX IO tests.

Boba,

That was with prime95 running 100%.

After 21 hours with no errors, I turned off the test. Normal temps went to 37C to 60C.
