  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Using Anton/Bauer with RED cameras

To answer your question, I don't have an exact cable for your application as the PowerStrap 13 has a 5p XLR on it. The CA-RED cable goes from 4p XLR to 6p LEMO. So, my options to you would either be to change the 5p XLR in the belt to a 4p XLR or change the 4p XLR on the CA-RED cable to a 5p XLR.Regards,Paul

Hi Paul. Would your CC-4XLR 5pin to 4 pin cable work with the powerstrap with the LEMO plugging into it?

Is there another Anton Bauer belt you would recommend
that would last longer than the Powerstraps with the RED?

Hi Sam,

Yes, you can. But now you have 4 connections (one for each connector) and you will get a bigger loss in voltage, especially over larger distances or with higher power draws.

We do have a 30/13 belt which is larger 13 lbs.) and will run twice as long as the PowerStrap 13. However, if you are looking for a belt solution, I would suggest the SO-30/13, in which you can snap-on two identical Anton/Bauer batteries and have continuous power. It is a perpetual belt, so once one battery dies, it will switch to the other, allowing you to replace the dead one and not have to power down. You can go with either (2) Dionic 90's or (2) HyTRON 100 (or 140's) and get 2+ hours of run-time.

Regards,
Paul

Is the QR-HotSwap-GM usable with all other brands of batteries using the gold mount, or only with Anton Bauer batteries?

Thanks!

The Dionic 90 sized battery weighs considerably less than other Anton Bauer battery types such as the Hytron 140. Too much weight hanging off this adapter would pull it from the camera's battery mount plate, leading to intermittent contact or even physical breakage. Because of this, the mount is specifically shaped to only allow Anton Bauer Dionic 90 or Hytron 50 (same case design and similar weight) batteries to mount. I have no idea as to other manufacturers who also use the 3-pin Anton Bauer mount, but if you put too much weight on the adapter it will cause a failure, one that might cost you money. Note that the weight of the adapter with two Dionic 90 batts is still less than the weight of a single Hytron 140, and it delivers more power and allows for hot-swapping.

I am looking into this as well. I believe the QR-HotSwap-GM can (theoretically) be easily modified physically to accept other batteries (Anton Bauer or other brands), larger than the Dionic 90 or Hytron 50. I hope I'm not wrong, but some metal cutting to allow more room for larger batteries could be enough.

Of course, the issue of weight is still an important one. However, one doesn't have to have two batteries all the time (although you lose the advantage of combining their power). You can have only one battery mounted on it, snap a second one and remove the first one when it's almost depleted. The advantage of this hot swap unit being that you don't have to turn the camera off when switching batteries.

If the above is not possible, then what other alternatives do we have for hot swapping larger Gold Mount batteries? The V-Mount Hot Swap adapter accepts large capacity batteries:

It would be a shame if we won't have that capability with 3-stud units.

Let me note that even if this is theoretically possible (and with a machine shop, just about anything is), this does not make it a good idea. The battery mount is made of plastic, and too much weight will mean failure. Only one battery mounted will mean the weight is not distributed properly, which can eventually mean failure.

Mitch is correct. We would strongly recommend putting 11 lbs of batteries (HyTRON 100/120/140, ProPac14) on one of the Gold Mounts. They are not designed to handle that type of weight.

As for cutting a little bit of metal, it is going to be a little more than that. You need to extend the mounts out another 1/2 - 1" to allow them to fit. You may want to ask a machine shop what they would charge to do that.

Deaar Mitch,

Hello. Don't know if you have checked Dynacore Batteries with AB mount and Sony V-Mount, compatible with Sony and Anton Bauer batteries? www.dynacore-china.com Guess some items will be of your interest ;-)

I don't know if the Tandem 70 has the juice to power the hungry beast that is RED. 70 means 70 watts of power, and I believe the RED draws closer to 100w, especially if there are a few accessories hooked up.

I don't know if we can sell this product overseas. We do sell others. Different vendor agreements with different manufacturers have various restrictions. Best to send me an email with your contact info and I'll ask a Sales Rep. to get back to you.

I believe Paul meant to say "we would strongly recommend AGAINST putting 11 lbs."

Btw, in reference to an earlier question, Abel can sell Anton Bauer products worldwide. We offer specially-priced RED bundles for Dionics, Hytrons and the large Cine blocks.

Hi Folks,
I have two Hytron 100 batteries, wondering if I can us these with the RED and if so, what's the best mounting solution, the QR-RED or a V-lock to gold mount adaptor.
Does the QR-RED come with a cable or do I have to rewire?
Does it feed remaining time info to the camera?
Approx. how long would each Hytron 100 power the camera for?

Many thanks in advance,

Paul

You can use either solution, although I would suggest the QR-RED if it is going to be used with any frequency. The QR-RED does indeed come with a cable. The camera will not read remaining time as it will currently only communicate with RED brand batteries. In theory a Hytron 100 will run the camera for about an hour, but that particular model has not been manufactured for a few years now (replaced by the Hytron 120 and then 140) so it likely does not deliver this much power anymore.

Mitch,

Just to clarify, Anton/Bauer still manufactures the HyTRON 100 and the HyTRON 140 batteries.

Thanks.
Paul

Sorry, my bad. Thought the Hytron 100 had been replaced.
