FYI, Hornets are mean.... I got swarmed by several today and got a couple nasty stings. As I was running away I got stung again and tripped on our concrete steps resulting in nasty cuts on both shoulders, both knees and my face.
If you see a nest be proactive and kill them before they get cha.

Man, every summer my neighborhood buddies and I did battle with hornets. They always lived in the overhang of roofs, and we would blast them with a hose and then run like hell.. hahaha.

...damn Curt. Sorry to read of your misfortune. I've been doing battle with mud wasps around my house lately, nasty little buggers.

Aw c'mon guys. Live and let live....after all, they're kinda photogenic.....

Or just walk carefully and try not harming them :innocent:

You should be grateful they were not taking your advice...

...... my worst nightmare.....

I'm allergic. Highly. Death becomes my new friend allergic.....

EDIT: Sorry, my initial shock took over - Heal well, hope you feel better.

Kinda hard when the nest was right above the back door of our house :)

OK, so they are not mean. They are just protecting their home :)

More scary critters:

Learn about the bullet ant, africanized honey bee, army/soldier ant and the botfly.

Also scary: brown recluse spider. The bites look like a mosquito bite at first... and then it gets really bad. You can look up pictures, but it might be NSFW.
The initial bite frequently cannot be felt and there may be no pain, but over time the wound may grow to as large as 10 inches (25 cm) in extreme cases. Bites usually become painful and itchy within 2 to 8 hours, pain and other local effects worsen 12 to 36 hours after the bite with the necrosis developing over the next few days.

I'm not quite that allergic, but definitely a little bit. Although I haven't been stung in like 20 years, I used to get stung when I was a kid. If I got stung on a finger it would swell up to like double the size and I would feel tired and nauseous.
Strange thing is that wasp stings didn't seem to give me a problem at all really.

Kalone: Touche.

A friend of mine got bit by one of those when we were in high school. He lived with a dark brown splotch of puffy skin, about 5" in diameter, for a couple years from that bite!

But our local baddy is the rattlesnake. I got bit by one last august. Thankfully I had on some heavy welding gloves so the fangs just barely poked the skin and not enough venom entered the wound to do anything but give a warm tingly feeling to the area. Here's my crappy iphone shot. Those on the scene thought I was going to call for help when I was screwing with the phone, but no, dumbass me was taking a picture. ...And that was after I dispatched the snake with extreme prejudice.
