Is it possible to edit offline in ProRes 1080 or even in ProRes 2k with cheaper RAID solutions? Like Firewire800-based raids...

Thanks.

we've cut entire features on 2 daisied fw8's (1tb each) at dvcproHD, prores HQ isn't that much more of a data rate, you could online 1080 if you really wanted to off of 'em!

A fast single SATA drive is enough for ProRes, but a nice RAID will give your more than one stream.

Regards,

Uli

Thanks for the answers!

If it's not too much trouble, can somebody quickly point to an example or two? From there, I can probably keep searching myself for other similar cheap RAID options that can handle ProRes HQ 2K (more than one stream would be nice)...

Why don't use AJA IO HD? what's wrong with that one?

Don't you still need a RAID to edit ProRes HQ 2K with AJA IO HD?

Regardless, I am planning on using the Blackmagic Multibridge Pro to monitor in 2K. I don't want to buy the AJA IO HD on top of that. I am interested in affordable RAID options. Any held would be appreciated!

P.S. I must confess I am not too knowledgeable in RAID options, as you can see. Can someone explain what kind of RAID would I need to offline in ProRes HQ 2K versus online in DPX 2K? What are the speeds required for both routes?

to online you would probablly want a sata raid0 or raid5, to offline you can get a firewire800 casing with 2 slots inside to raid together around 2tb which gives you transfer speeds of the fw800 but with the storage capacity of multiple disks. G-tech makes some great casings, Lacie makes some ok ones (other people swear by them, i on the other hand haven't had one come thru the shop that hasn't died somewhere along the way) or you can save some money, buy the drives and casings seperately and build & format yourself.

Hope that helps!

I've had no problems using 1080 ProRes HQ on a new Mac Pro with two internal drives striped as a RAID-0. That said I'm not really working with lots of layered footage on this project.

Thanks so much for the suggestions!

Is it safe to say that a RAID that works fine with 1080 ProRes HQ will also work fine with 2K ProRes HQ?

I edit everything I shoot with RED online, in realtime, at 2K Prores HQ with a single external FW800 non-raid drive. Computer is an 8-core, 3.0 GHz Mac Pro with 4GB of RAM. Nothing crazy. Maybe if you're doing several layers and hefty color correcting from within FCP you'll need higher data rates, but as far as pure cutting is concerned, I'm not understanding all this talk about needing a RAID to get by.

Hi Haakon,

Good to know. Maybe I'll do it with a simple 2-disk RAID 0 firewire 800 RAID, just to be on the safe side.

Are you finishing your stuff in ProRes HQ 2K (as the finishing format)? I suppose that you go back in REDCINE to re-export everything once done with editing the ProRes clips that came off the proxies (after transcoding).

Thanks!

Well, just to mention that a RAID 0 is not precisely "on the safe side" …

If you can get along with a single SATA drive, why not?
