  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1080P Capture Via Build 16

It would be great if the 3840 x 2160 could be taken from the sensor, scaled to 1080, and recorded directly to the Red Drive.

There has been mention of a 1080p rgb record option to be implemented at some point. I think it is probably a bit lower on the radar screen as other things might be a bit more pressing at this time, but it has been discussed ss an option and the bonus would be that you would most likely see 1080p live outputs.

That would be such a good implementation for me as well as most other EFP guys! I'd be able to sell the camera much easier to clients.

Will you do the same for new spec? 4480 x 1874 or 4.5k?

Not sure I would be using that mode for projects that would use the capturing method. These projects are the quick turnaround types. For a movie, we'd be using a different workflow.

pvillow, AJA Io HD cannot read 1080p. AJA said they are weeks away from doing so. Lim

You mean, the HD SDI output from the Red can not be send and recorded prores 422 to the HD SDI input of the AJA ?

The Aja spec Video Input says :
Digital:
SD and HD-SDI, SMPTE-259/292/296
(2 inputs)

What are these HD SDI inputs for then ?

You CAN NOT record 1080p from the Red via Kona3 right now. That is because Kona captures 1080Psf - which is NOT 1080p.

RED outputs true 1080p - progressive frames - not progressive segmented frames

see - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_segmented_Frame

AJA is working on 1080p support upgrade - and I have been told that it is a matter of "weeks not months" before we get it.

You should also note - timecode is currently NOT embedded (either is audio) in the HDSDI outputs of the RED. However ... I am crossing my fingers that is implemented in Build 17.

I went through this with the AJA guys and we created a 1080P capture setting that is working. You need to download 1080p presets from support page.

Steves, you are the man!

If this is the greatest notice for workers (like me) that suffer workflow on-set, with clients, directors, DOP and more asking for a re-play!!!

1080p AJA combo is enough for me.

Thanks, thanks a lot men, I´VE GOT IT!!!! YEEEEPIII!!!

Steve, can you guide me to the support page at AJA that has the 1080p presets and how can they be applied. Thanks Lim

Yes, has anyone tried a XENA from AJA in this application?

Stuart,

Can't speak for the Xena card, but I am trying to do the same 1080p capture to a Matrox Axio LE card.

No luck so far. It recognizes that there is an SDI device attached, but no picture. Any thougts?

Blackmagic Design's DeckLink HD Extreme

Seems like Blackmagic Design's DeckLink HD Extreme would have the same problem then.

HD Format Support 1080PsF23.98/24, 1080i48, 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 720p59.94, 720p60 and 720p50.

Would be cool to pay < $1K for an on set capture card with that much talent Versus Kona3 at almost 3X the cost especially if just you were using it for playback on set.

Time Code Output

Time Code Output

True. I'll give that a whirl. Very good point Stuart.

Now if you only had a way to give me timecode, I'd really have something here.

Try Build 16 v3.2.4 available on the red.com/support site, this version as Time Code available on the LEMO 5 pin connector.

Looking forward to getting back and checking this out. Thanks Stuart!

Hi Steve, just wondering how you got on/are getting on with this workflow???

Is the playback output still 1080p @ 8 bits? Any quality improvements with the latest camera build? Timecode?

Any news would be great

Cheers,

Tom

Playback should be 10bit and it should be 1080P 4:2:2 for single link SDI and 4:4:4 for dual link.

My problems stem from color accuracy, I still need to do this test with the internal color chart and check the values to see if there are any issues. I've noticed that shots that are processed from the R3Ds in RA or RC have a weird color tint to them when using REC709 color space (these shots are fine when using Camera RGB and the Rec709 Gamma), So I'm wondering if this is the same issue I'm facing when capturing from the HD-SDI out from the camera. Need to test this. I've been super busy lately and haven't got to it yet.

Thanks for the update Steve.

It would be great to hear from RED regarding the color tint with REC709.

This workflow would really rock for us - we would be able to retire our trusted HDW-750p for good :rip_1: and just use our gorgeous RED ONE

Eagerly awaiting developments.

All the best,

Tom
