  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Price of cine lenses

The cine lens market has traditionally dealt in tiny volumes. Cooke sells, I think, something like 150 S4 sets a year, and I'd be surprised if the other cine lens makers worked at much higher volumes. Red plans to ship 400 cameras in July alone. And a substantial number of Red users really like the idea of owning a full shootable package, so they don't have to rent anything for most shoots.

Supply/demand is seriously whacked (that's a technical term) in the PL-mount lens market at present. The traditional cine lens makers didn't prepare for this, and I suspect their production methods would have serious problems dealing with such high volumes even in principle. High-end cine lenses -- and there are hardly any other kind, sold new -- are basically hand-made.

My take on Red making its own lenses? It's a nice way to generate some extra revenue, and I guess they want to bring prices down the same way they have with the camera. But most of it is just plain necessity, I think. If Red didn't have its own line of lenses, by the time camera #4000 shipped, there wouldn't be any lenses left in the market for its owner to buy.
