Any news on when we are going to get a facility to delete the last clip in camera ?

This would save me a lot of storage space used for clips I know didn't work out.

better still, a thumbnail view of all the clips on the media on the LCD/EVF would be great. very similar to how P2 works. I hate having to skip through 75 clips on a drive manually to review a take.

AGREED! :)

Sorry, but I think this is a recipe for disaster.

I find it hard to understand why you would want to delete anything on the camera.

Fine if Red wants to put it there, but I sure as hell don't want it "active" by default.

I completely agree with Mark and think that if needs to be there it should be buried so far down the menu's, that you will find it only if you really want to activate it.

I can see deleting clips could be feared by some. But not if its a confirm, confirm, ultra confirm process. Thumbnails would be great even without the addition of a delete option. I dont want to push 75 button clicks to see footage from earlier in the day, and it's a guessing game without icons.

1000% agree

With the very low cost of storage on the RED, why would anyone want to take the chance?

I just got a support telephone call the other day from a crew shooting a feature on two REDs in Alaska. They wanted to know how to do file recovery from a REDDrive. They 'think' that an AC accidentally hit the format command instead of the unmount command. This one has a confirmation step and UI warning, but still, the person proceeded.

A lot can happen on set that probably wouldn't happen under less stressful situations. Having yet another potential for a user induced problem would not be something I would vote to include.

Just my $.02 on the subject.

I use the delete button on my DSLR a lot and I don't see why my RED should not have one. Not being able to delete means more need for storage space and more work for the editor.

Deleting in the camera also has the advantage that clip numbers will still be in order, while deleting from the hard disk will create gaps.

Two concerns:

1. filesystem fragmentation increases tremendously. DSLRS son't have to worry about sustaining realtime rates.

2. recovery after formatting or any other filesystem problems becomes really complex or impossible.

i could take or leave a delete clip function, but I still wish the thumbnail feature was in place

If it was only the last clip that was deleteable, then it shouldn't create any file fragmentation, right?

Would it be an idea to have a relatively quick delete button (a function which of course can be disabled), and then an "undo" option - until the record button is pushed. That way we would get both: few button pushes to delete the last clip, but also a chance to undo a mistake.

I have the feeling that the line of "wanting delete" and "loathing delete" has a lot to do whether you are owner/operator or renting out, and whether you shoot scripted/drama or factual/nature/news/docu.

If it were technically easy and there was no downside, we would do it. But it isn't and there is so we won't.

You guys need to understand that we need to pick our battles.

I like the idea of deleting the most recent clip. Kind of a "that was a cruddy take" deletion function. And for those that don't want it, have it be a function that can be disabled through the menu.

Ok,
then what about a marker in the metadata ?
Something like "good take" or "bad take" ? You could assign these to one of the user assignable buttons.
1 click = "good take", 2 clicks = "Bad take", 3 clicks = no marker... Something like that...

That may be very useful when sorting your footage after the shoot.
Would need to be supported by the post-production softwares, of course, but that would be great. And this should not be too hard to add...

Imagine, you import all your clips into FCP and would be able to immediately select and watch the takes you marked as "good", while putting the "bad takes" asside (but still being able to use them if you need them)...

delete in camera is a bad idea, especially when it is easy and just as fast to put in a new card.

It's clear delete isn't going to happen due to technical reasons so we need to let that go. I agree with Slinnn that a tag would be useful. If I have flagged 5 good takes out of 20, I'd love to be able to selectively copy them off, reducing need for backup space plus saving tons of time in post.

I know we could log clip names as we go but it would be great to do it in camera and keep the data together.

And how do you propose changing the magazine or CF card underwater? Indeed, you would need to be very fast.

There is your answer..."you need to be very quick"
