Hello, I am a film student who recently shot a short film on the RED ONE and am now in the stages of post-production. I am using FinalCut Pro and have imported and rendered the H size QT files. When I try to merge a clip and sync the footage with a sound file (.wav) it does merge but does not sync properly. I assume this has to do with the Viewer window and the Gamma playback. Even after I render the video clip in the timeline and bring back to the bin it will not play in real time in the Viewer window. My question is: How can I successfully sync sound in FinalCut Pro with RED footage and/or is there a way to open a clip in the Viewer window and have it play in real time? I would much appreciate any help/direction. Thank you very much for your time.

can you playback the file alone in in the viewer?

sounds like your computer cannot sustain the data rate needed

ive had a few problems in post but dont do what ur doin if u recorded sound on set just telecine your clips in redcine or redalert not changing the i or o and drop them in a final cut timeline and drag the audio from the high quality reference file then link the audio and video , make a subclip and log the clip

yeah, there really is nothing good about the proxies besides holding audio information, it sounds like you recorded to dat, so sync your dat files with an actual quicktime, not just a wrapper and you should be fine

I new to FC... is there a way of synching a bunch of clips, video and audio, in a single timeline and then export each individual cut as a subclip with audio?

Yes there is a way...:) This is a workflow for manual syncing -

drop all your clips in a timeline.

left click on the first clip.

place a marker (m) where the slate (or what ever you used to sync)

in the browser double click the matching audio file. The audio opens in the viewer.

find the slate clap - or what ever u used to sync with. Place a marker (press "m") at the exact frame where the "clap" is heard.

set an "in - Point" - (press i)

make sure snapping is on (n).

drag the audio using the little "hand icon" in the viewer, down to the time line until it "snaps" to your marker in the clip on the timeline.

trim the audio so it matches the clip lenght if possible (to avoid later hazzle)

select both clips (drag around both - or cmd click). press cmd L (apple L) to link the clips together. - there is a line under the name of the clip in the time line.

drag the newly linked clips out of the timeline and into the browser. (or drag em all at the same time)

select the new clip (or clips) under "modify" select "make subclip" (cmd U)

voila !

of course there are other way to do this . but this is, in my opinion the most fool proof way. (instead of dragging with hand icon you could set an in point in the time line over the sync marker in the clip and press f9 to insert the clip)

hope it helps:)

good luck with your film

cool... thanks for the tip. what about if I have done this for several clips in the timeline? do I have to create each subclip independently? or can just do something like "create subclips from sequence"

perfect! just dragging the clips on the timeline to the browser works... thats what I was looking for.

thanks a lot!

normally fcp is set to view in best quality u can change to meduim or less. that doesn't affect anything in the final product, just makes it easier to surf through ur video faster.
