I’ve been following this forum for a while and based on requests here I designed a Clip-on finder for the 5.6” Red LCD. My focus was on optical clarity, light weight and low price. I built a prototype for Cine-Gear and from the feedback there I can say that everyone was impressed. Right now I’m sending drawings for quotation and would like to know how many present and future Red One owners would like to buy one. If you order now, there is a $50 discount. The code is “redclip” (put it in your email) and is good for $50 off the preliminary $400 price. The offer is good for the next 30 days.
Here is the link to my website with pictures, description and pdf brochure.

The first batch should be ready in July.
Check out my other post about our broadcast monitors- another new product for Cine-Gear.
If you are based in Los Angeles or visiting here you are welcome to bring your camera and test it out yourself.

very neat.

i'm interested in your solution but already have my red evf. do you think your lcd adapter still holds value for someone like me? i really like the light weight of the lcd. how much more weight would this add? i'm curious to know where people think uses for something like this vs. the native evf fall.

btw-i think your pdf brochure link is pointing to the wrong product.

Thank you fot your kind word Kurt.
Wigby:
The first use that comes to mind is a backup for your EVF.
Other uses would come in when you need a light weight setup and/or fast switch between operating with a viefinder and LCD- like a steadycam job.
I'm not an operator so this is when I stop speculating. The weight for production units will be around 10oz. certainly light enough for the standard lcd arm support.

I think I'm in. do you think we would have to remount the lcd somewhere forward for handheld use?

Thank you, Maxwax,
I mounted the clip-on today as far forward as I could and snapped couple of pics. Note that I used the standard LCD arm which is short. You could buy a longer one and extend it further, if needed. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Looks like you might need to blacken the edges of the lens elements or perhaps the inside of the hood itself.

Wonder what the eyestrain is like looking into a magnified LCD monitor over time- then again it's the same on many other EVFs nowadays. The one thing you lose of course are the EVF controls for the camera- these are nice. It wouldn't be too hard to incorporate into this design- would it?

design, finish and performance

design, finish and performance

Chuck,
This is the first prototype to proof the optical design- it's not even anodized. I did paint it inside and out and it took care of reflections. The image quality, btw is very clean, no color fringing compared to EVF, corners sharp and lines straight all the way. We had a EVF mounted above and we were switching looking through them to compare. For some reason the EVF image looked slightly different(more greenish) compared to the LCD. I did not adjust anything.
Mike,
The basic shape is final, the optical design as well. There will be rubber eye cup on production units and the fit and finish should be film gear quality.
We are making these out of aluminum sheet metal for weight and ruggedness purposes.
Noah,
I'm not sure what camera controls you want but to me any electronic addition spells trouble-delays, cost, etc. You still have access to the LCD controls.
Thank you everyone for the input and support and keep them coming!!!!

well I think you'd have to mount it farther forward then that for the camera to balance well, but that's not a huge issue, I've already moved mine forward. I have an LCD loupe for my DSLR and outside in sunlight it's the difference between being able to see clearly and not. I imagine this would be the same thing.

viewfinder vs LCD screen

viewfinder vs LCD screen

Exactly right Maxwax,
The purpose for VF is to get accurate picture regardless of enviroment.
BTW how is the image quality with the lcd loupe?
I was mostly concerned with the minimizing color fringing of high contrast edges and made sure that I can se every pixel all the way in the corner. Most of these loupes also have barrel distortion that makes framing very difficult.

Unless it has changed.

Jacek- how do we order? I sent an email to the one listed on your site, but haven,t heard anything.

I got your email Raul,
When they are close to finish I'll let everyone know and will give ordering details as well. Realistically end of July
Larry,
If you are in real dire straits let me know and I'll send you my prototype- Its perfectly usable.

Thanks Jacek, that is very generous. I just sent an email to my Bomb Squad rep asking if he could find out if my EVF will arrive before the shoot. I will let you know as soon as I hear back from him. Again, thanks for the offer. That's what I love about this community. I let somebody borrow something a while back because he was in a bind and now that same kindness is being offered to me. This place rocks.
