I agree with Brook. There has to be an app for mac and pc that can format a red drive without causing fragmentation.


A short term workaround would be a background format. I've noticed, that it's not the format time that is the problem, it's the fact that the lcd and EVF (and depending on what is hooked up,) the HD SDI monitors don't have an image. If you could make the formatting progress window be just a lower third or smaller it would be great. Also, a real progress bar that showed the actual progress would be better than the current progress bar.

Please ALWAYS reformat before recording on a new mag and never erase anything on a mag unless you intend to reformat.

Can erasing the cards on the Mac have any negatives effects? We always do this as protection against reformatting a card that hasn't been backed up yet. That way, when the A.C. puts the card in it reads as unformatted and 1. he knows he's not using a card that hasn't been backed up 2. he's forced to format the card.

You say unless you intend to format, which is what we do, but just wondered...

Correct. Erasing the cards has no effect and also erasing the magazine profiles so the camera doesn't see it as mag anymore and asks to reformat. If you don't then the camera will keep writing to it and you risk recording with fragmentation. It's best to always start with a fresh filesystem.
