Hi,

I was out shooting with my RED today, nothing fancy, some outdoors macro of plants/ants, and after 1 1/2hrs of shooting some vertical blue lines (three/four 1 pixel wide) started to show on the image.

I put the lens cap on (to see if it was refracted light from somewhere) but the lines were still there, leading me to suspect it was a sensor issue.

I shut down the RED, waited 10 secs and rebooted. Now, all but one of the lines had disappeared.

So, I shut down left the camera for 10 mins and rebooted again. Now all the lines had gone.

Is this a known issue with the RED? I suspect it had something to do with overheating, but I was running the RED in "Auto" fan mode.

Any thoughts on whether this caused the weird blue lines?

We've used the Red in some pretty hot places in the last 7 months and have never experienced vertical blue lines as you describe. Make sure your fan is set to "variable" as that's the setting that should manage it the best. Did the lines show up in the footage or were they soley on the LCD feed?

I just checked, and the lines are on the footage.
It's really weird, I wonder if it was just a computer glitch from the prolonged run time...

O.k

So the lines came up again on the camera today, and spoiled a number of shots.

The camera had been running 45mins in the sun in Hawaii. It was shaded and the temperature gauge on the screen said the temp was "OK". The fan mode was set to variable.

Once again when I turned off the camera and let it cool down the lines went away. Is there anyone from RED who know what is causing the lines to appear? Is it the sensor overheating? And if so, why would the noise lines only appear in the same place? The lines look like some sort of digital noise in redcine (i.e they break and shift, but the noise is limited only to the vertical lines seen)?

32bit Tiff showing the issue

Sounds like a good time to contact red support.

I have the blue lines also :(

Got the camera back from a rental, and now I also have a blue/green vertical line on the right side.. I´ve never seen it before. I'll do a new black shading/turn fan on hot etc. to see if it goes away..

Hi all,

Sent my RED #646 (the one which experienced the lines issue) to RED for repair and was told that it was most likely caused because of an issue with the fans not keeping the camera as cool as it was meant to be.

This was causing the sensor or connectors to become too hot, and in turn was causing digital noise to appear either on the sensor along the manufacturing lines or in the areas attached to the affected connectors.

RED fixed the camera so it now runs at the correct temp and have assured me this will not occur again.

Hope that helps anyone out there with the same issue.

I'm having the same problem with one vertical line in the exact middle of the image. The line is on the image itself and seems like its one pixel in width. Here's a 4k frame grab:

This line shows up with different lenses usually at max focal length. The line is very fine but definitely is noticeable.

I had a vertical line of black dots appear on the right third of the frame on one shot -- we did a black shading calibration and it went away, but I wonder what caused it. I only caught it because I was looking at a 17" HD monitor.

I never noticed it on the 17" monitor but sure noticed it in Redcine... the line stands out at 1/4 res on Redcine and appears real fine at full res.

The vertical line has disappeared once I upgraded to build 16 and did a black calibration. I didn't do a black calibration on Build 15 so it could just be solely a black calibration fix.
