Got my camera almost a week ago (#1903) had a chance to put it together, play with it, learn workflow a little, then for no reason I could discern it would not power up. toubleshooting lead to a trouble ticket which lead to RED issuing a fedex label to ship it back next day (Thanks for prompt response, RED) packed it up and shipped it, next day air.

Well, never shows up at RED, tracking last had it in Indianapolis. Fedex says they are looking for it, but I sense no urgency on their part. Maybe they will call me in a day they say. (my plan is to call them 3 times a day starting today.) To their credit RED is stirring the pot on their end as well, but it remains missing.

Oh, and I lost a rental next week.

At least I have my health.

Sounds like the camera is a lot of trouble. Forward it to me after Red have repaired it and I'll take care of it for you. It's the least I could do.

My heart does go out to ye.

Hang in there. Life throws these things at you from time to time.

Start to lean on Fedex asking them if they are going to take care of paying you for the lost work due to their mistake of loosing the camera. Then to get them really fired up ask for their "registered address". The average employee won't know what this is but upper management will (A companys registered address is technically their lawyers office). This should get you some top notch service, if the FedEx manager asks why you want their registered address tell him because your lawyer recomended you get it.

good advice. I have been very polite with Fedex so far. not entirely sure why.

Find a regional manager at the last Fed Ex location the cameras was tracked to.

Some of these guys are amazing..
Short story is during the Houston Super Bowl
I found a regional manager on a Sunday and talked him into going to the warehouse and picking up a Deko that was mis-marked,(By our people).

Treat these people with kit gloves and explain your situation and it will come back to you. Fed Ex is one of the best shipping companies you will ever use!

Good luck & God's speed!!

Dave

So far that is my plan, be nice, stress importance. Yelling may come later.

And in answer to craig's question, it wasn't hanging on the boot, it just plain did nothing when i tried powering up. and yes I tried various battery/cradle power from charger options. no joy. day befor worked fine- nothing had been removed or added and it just wouldn't do anything in morning.

So I called Fedex this morning, after waiting to give them some time due to time difference. I gave them the tracking number and roughly this is the conversation that happened:
"No sir, it is still lost"
"what happens next?"
Well, sir if they don't find it by monday, you will have to file a lost or stolen claim"
(at this point I think of, among other things, losing my place in line and waiting 4 more months for a cam...and try not to think how the $17500 is going to sort out)
"so the last it was seen was in indianapolis?"
"No, it was last scanned in Irvine, California"
"wait, that's new! when did that happen?"
"Hold on sir, this doesn't sense, can I put you on hold?"
"Absolutely"
2 minute interlude of inane music
"Sir we are showing it at irvine california sorting facility, if you want to check in half an hour, we can confirm it is on a truck for delivery. Do you want to put a hold on it?"
"No! no, no let it go! I want it to get to it's destination!"

WHEW!
at this point it is not at RED yet, it is still broken, and who knows if any additional damage happened while it was off radar, but at least we know where it is and it is close to RED. Odd that Fedex did not contact me when it showed up in tracking again- and that even they seemed surprised....

here's to looking forward to deciding if I use Fedex for its return trip.

if the FedEx manager asks why you want their registered address tell him because your lawyer recomended you get it.

Many employees at big companies are trained that as soon a customer mentions lawyers or lawsuits, they are to immediately shut up and refer all calls from that customer to their legal department. They will put a note in your account to that effect.

Finner's plan sounds like a great way to end all communications with Fedex. It does not sound like a great way to get your camera back!

I have found Fedex to be incredibly helpful with lost-package situations. If you find a rep who is not, call back or ask for a supervisor. If the 800 number isn't getting you to good reps, call the local office.

You know this because you went to lawschool before becoming a DIT? What you are suggesting is not even close to how big companies work on this issue. My best friend is a Lawyer and I have only had to pull the "registered address" trick twice with companies that were badly giving me the run around. In both situations I was moved up the line and dealt with by upper management. In both situations my issues were taken care of that day. It is not something you want to pull out unless you are getting no where. Also the key is to always be nice and never get mad, firm but respectful.

If it at all helps.
I sold my Intel MAC tower 3 months ago to a company in Flordia
sent it FedEx paid $4,000.00 insurance which costs me something like $190.00
When the customer received it. It was physically damaged and dropped from such a height that it broke off the bottom curved foot of the MAC tower.
Snapped off and bent in.

FEDEX never paid anything they said it was packaging.
not negligence on their part.

I will never use FED Ex if i can avoid it.

good news- Camera hit red Thur morning- they fixed it and shipped it back to me on Monday. It hit my door today (Wed) thanks to FEDEX did not lose it on its return trip. I am testing again now, but it does power up- and perhaps a little older and wiser now. I may post a unboxing take 2 when i get around to it.
looking forward to using it on paid job soon.
