16GB for B16...

That's incorrect information. I have 4 Lexar cards and they tell me the % left with no problems...now third party batteries are another story!

The cost issue here is that RED is having to have these specially made. The cost sucks for both of us (RED and us the users). However, they do give us longer recording times and are STILL cheaper the the friggin P2 cards! Panasonic must be making a pretty penny even after R&D costs considering they are just using almost standard SD cards inside the card (and I may be wrong about that.)

Matthew

Okay, good to know. Sorry for the misinformation. I was told by a usually reputable source. I guess I better not mention names now. :whistling: Or maybe they meant the batteries.

If you would rather wait till someone else comes out with a fast 16GB that's cheap, then please do. We got tired of waiting as did many of our customers that asked for 16GB cards every day.

Price does seem a bit high... I do not feel the need to constantly compare digital work flow to film. with film you need PEOPLE to manage and do the developing/processing.

With digital you have to do the work all by your little self...

As a DP I do like that control, and I do not have a problem with the price.

But please stop trying to relate the RED work flow to film.... it is not a fit!

i will finalize my order...when i order the 16 gb now will they be shipped in july?
cant risk backorders....would be no problem...i would order more 8 gb instead and wait...but if they are in stock...hehe i want some.

look at it this way 10mins of raw film costs about $500 , 16gb costs $550 , you can't reuse film and the processing adds costs on top

This is NOT a widely available product and shouldn't be compared to anything else out there.

It's not just doubling the price of an 8-gig, that's a different ballgame completely.

If they say it costs $550, it costs $550. I trust them and don't believe they are trying to screw anyone on price.

Besides, I don't think anything EVER said on this board has had an effect on the list price, nor should it.

Believe me, if they asked us all what we would pay for the RED One body, I'm sure we would have all guessed $50k- $100k plus! Thank God they don't listen to us!

I'm quite over the "cost seems high" posts... as compared to what? Cost of flash is two things, size and speed. It is NOT just size.

Anyone who says the cost is high is nuts (sorry) because you have nothing that compares in size AND speed that is cheaper. When that changes, so will our prices. Until then...

Jim

550 is more than fair.........

It certainly seems to be... until someone can come up with one that actually works and is cheaper.

It is pretty frustrating to work so hard on this stuff and have people that have no clue tell us we are priced too high. We did not want to spend the engineering $$$ to do this but we got tired of waiting for the flash guys to get it right.

If you have noticed, SanDisk sells CF cards of the same size for different prices ($119-$314 for 8GB CF cards)... the only difference is speed. We could sell you a 16GB card for $180. Problem is that it won't record anything on the RED ONE, let alone everything.

Jim

You will never make everybody happy. Yes it is a fair price and I will be ordering several for our systems I can only imagine the frustration after all the effort to have someone say it's seems high.

I guess they can just go buy it cheaper somewhere else... Oh wait that's not possible !!

How about this:

We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone with a cheap attitude.

At least you will know quickly. As soon as you put the card in, it will say "sorry, card is too f%$#$&g slow". Then you can pop it is your DSLR and it will work just fine. But then again, so will the RED CF card.

I guess my lack of sleep (manners) is showing?

Jim

Someone else will know quickly as we only use RED cards and Drives with our cameras.
Somebody is tired.

Jim,

Can you sell it for $500 and still be able to recover your engineering costs (and maybe make a small profit) as a support to your loyal customers so that everybody is happy?

Well, I am just a messenger.

I agree with both sides of this:

1. I agree with Jim, the price is more than fair considering he had to absorb the R&D himself to have these made.

2. I also agree that considering the market, these are overpriced. Not because of Jim, but because of CF manufacturers that are in a kind of cartel mode right now in order to maximize their return on investment of their current products. Until one of the big players make a move to the next level, they are all stting on their hands on the R&D side. The card RED had to develop should already be there on the market and at a much lower price.

You know that in acient times kings loved to kill the messenger?

For cheap GB and lots of space there is the Redraid, for safety first (my bet) there are the CFs. If you want both you have to pay.

For those who are on a tight budget there are viable alternatives. Personally I find Red's price policy truly revolutionary and I still wonder how they pulled that off.

Come on guys, for custom made CFs I find the new 16GB not expensive at all. Buy some rolls of film, expose it and then you know what expensive means.

Begging for 100 bucks seems rediculous and ungrateful.

Hey Jim, everyone is excited and happy about the 16GB!

The "Too expensive" remarks only surfaced because everyone silently supposed & hoped that the 16ers would be at the same prices/GB as the 8ers. We will certainly buy several 16er. But the 16ers are the most expensive storgae/Min so far for the red, drive is cheaper, 8 is cheaper per min - and being spoiled with 40$/50$ minutes with hdcam tapes we still have to swallow the whole concept of reuseable media.

This is not true. CF and SSD price based on flash chip prices. Unless you're someone like Samsung who makes flash or someone like Dell who can buy in huge quantities, you're stuck with the same prices that everyone else pays. Then there's the controller it's cost/development. Add to that the cost of R&D, maintaining inventory, hedging fluctuating flash prices, admistrative costs, support, and everything else and $550 is actually very aggressive pricing considering the small volumes (compared to what guys like lexar and sandisk sell).

And by the way, it was very hard getting the price down to $550 from a much much higher number.
