  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

One Build 16 note...

Is this coming soon? I saw it at NAB and can't wait till that goes live!

Working on that too ;) the rest of the year is going to be just as good if not better with the goodies :sorcerer: :weight_lift:

goodies, did someone say goodies, I love goodies!!!

Tell us more, Skip! Or.. where can I find out more?

Final Cut Studio is the only method of working with the footage for us at the moment. Scratch looks great, but it's way out of the price range of our independent work. FCP post is still a real headache, especially with the painfully slow transcoding speed in REDCine (on a Quad 3.0GHz Mac Pro w/ 8 gigs on a eSATA RAID). Perhaps a PCI-e card that transcodes REDcode is in order? Wouldn't that be the bomb.

We probably should have budgeted the $35k for the camera with another $20k for software. The hidden cost of working with RED seems to be the post production. I still wouldn't give up my cam for anything, though!

With the SDK out, perhaps we'll see a lot more competition.

Best,

ATF

It's a big question mark for me that Apple and RED decide to works together to support each other but yet they (apple) won't OR hardly listen. What is happening here ?

Good luck with that! It's years that we ask from apple to fix this... no improvement yet.

I have a stronger faith in the easter bunny being Jessica Rabbit and having a big treat for me then apple actually comming through with a decent red workflow. It's absolutely shocking to me how much better the underground hacked post solution I've seen works then the open sellable apple post headaches.

Finner, face it; the easter bunny and jessica do not like you so don't count apple out.

Poi you just don't seem to get it. The lack of red post support from apple has been shocking. I'm surprised Jim has not gone down to apple himself and shoved one of his big fat stoggies down Job's throat.(Jannard against Job's would be like a Captian Kirk vs Captian Pickard showdown. The odds would be 100 to one for Jim)

The fact that not one single apple employee working on a post solution has not even once posted on reduser with questions or answers speaks volumes. It is quite easy to see where red is on apples priority list from that alone.

But Finner, what Apple support do you want? Quicktime and FCP input data through Quicktime components and that is a freely available open SDK, which I think Red is also using for its Quicktime component for RedCode. I think that 4096 vs. 4000 pixel is an issue but that is something that may happen in a future version of FCP.

Similarly for Adobe support for Red. Adobe SDK is also freely and openly available and when Red's SDK is available anybody / 3rd party can write an importer for Red's R3D data.

Nobody listens to me...

Maybe you should buy everyone at red a pair of these:

The workflow apple promised was only a couple months away at NAB 2007 would be nice for starters.

ohh i get it now finner, thanks for helping me. lol

Glad I could help Alex.

By the way how is the swell these days? Damn I miss Hawaii.

There is still a QT gamma issue with Build 16.

As with previous builds:

If you open the QT Reference files, they will look dark.
If you open in FCP, they will look dark on the computer monitor (but correct on an external monitor)...

We are working with Apple to fix this issue.

Jim

Thanks for the update. Looking forward to seeing this one resolved.

Finner, APPLE has a very strict policy about talking outside the company. That does not mean they are doing nothing. Apple was extremely helpful with my R&D project (at least some individuals were...) and I could not complete it without them. Huge credits to Tom Reyburn, Skip Levens, Travis W. Brown and all the other engineers who helped out... I am sure the relevant Apple employees working on the solution are monitoring this forum very closely. But the moment they post a single line - they are out of the job...

Jim - if You want I would gladly put You in touch with the "right" senior people at WDR (Worldwide Developer Relations) who will take this further, or at least speed thing up where needed. I assume You must have some strong connections there - but feel free to PM me in this regard...

Travis, for example, has traveled to meet us in Tokyo for that particular project... He was the "Graphic & Imaging Evangelist" at WDR. He is now in different division, but that does not change what he has in his brain and his personality. Also Tom will be glad to help - I am sure...

Just let me know...

Yeah, both of them. On an iPhone.

Ponder... 14 million iphone users and a couple of iPod users waiting to pay for their flash-game update or 2000 RED cameras waiting for a free FCS workflow update...

Hey you, in accounting, what are our current R&D priorites?

Ah... Righ... That RED thing.

Sure!

I have no idea how Apple works internally, but I am with everyone else that the quicktime gamma issues have been a problem for a while and it needs to be fixed soon (even before adding new features to FCP). If you're going to play in the professional video realm, I think you need to take a professional approach. Apple has done some amazing things, FCP being on the top of the list, but it's all about the details. I can see not fixing something that only a few complain about, but Apple has been hearing about this one from a lot of people for a lot of years and it's still not solved.
