HI
What do U recomend as a field monitor for RED camera?

Can i use same monitor for Field and then for color grading in the studio, or shell i buy 2 different , one for field, smaller and not so accurate and one biger ( 24 inch) for Studio?

Better to buy 2k or 1080p? Resolution is better but also price is going much higher.

Please help me to make decision, is hard as i set up studio from the scrach and i do not know what is really worth to buy and what is not really nessesery.

So far, the RED ONE monitoring outputs are 720p. So even if you buy a high end HDTV you wont be able to see exactly what you are recording. (I dont know if they will improve this with further Build updates). At NAB they had a regular LG monitor with DVI inputs that seemed to work fine, plus they said thats the monitor they had been using for their own tests. I would suggest getting a BRIGHT monitor for exterior use that could work fine at the studio as well. And get a better monitor (color accuracy) for the editing suite, where you will be able to see your footage depending on the software you are using.

For our shoots with the RED, we've just used a panasonic 17" BT-LH1700W thru HD-SDI input for director, ad, dp, and it looks great (even done on-location with it on a bright beautiful california day.)

and as far as going 2k vs. 1080p, go with what you can afford. Red monitoring is as eseban said, limited to 720p, so a 2k will do you nothing but make you wallet slimmer essentially. By the time RED initiates a higher rez monitoring option, prices will have dropped on better, higer rez monitoring. Just a thought.

Monitoring is available since build 15 (simultanius on HD-SDI, EVF and LCD)
1080p support is announced for Build 16, but not live , just Playback.

I´m having an eye on the JVC 24" LCD Monitor , i had it a couple of days for testing and I´m very happy with it, but its 24" so its large and runs only on AC power, the BT-LH1700 (1760) is not full HD resolution, but better to handle and can also run on 12 V DC , I´m not sure yet which one I´ll take...

Have a look on the new HP DreamColor monitor. Not really cheap, but seems to be a very big bang for the buck :)

Has HDMI / DVI inputs, no HD-SDI, but who cares, the RED has HDMI too...

Question remains if RED will output more than 8 bits via HDMI.

I went with the panasonic 17" too and it works great.

We're selling the Panasonic BT-LH1700 17" monitors at incredibly good prices now that the BT-LH1760 is out. If the 1700 does it for you then now is a great time to get into one. I don't know how much longer Panasonic will make both models.

1760

1760

Whats different in the new model?

1760 offers much less power consumption, but I never use these on DC anyway, so . . .

Vectorscope is included now, which is nice, if it was easier to read.

Audio level meter display, time code display are nice. 1700 doesn't have these.

It's supposed to handle fast motion and render motion blur much more accurately . . . but side by side with a 1700 there's no discernible difference at all.

The killer is that the off axis viewing is MUCH worse - far different than the 1700. Enough so that I sent my 1760 back. They've dropped the price on the 1700, so I bought yet another of those. I have five now that work in the field a LOT. They aren't color critical, but are very useful for many applications.

I don't see a benefit to using a 1760 over a 1700 for a Red shoot myself, but that's just me.

Hey Greg,

As I understand it, double the refresh rate for minimal motion blurring, , better image quality, 3D LUTs, vector as well as waveform.

And a lot more expensive... ;) Looks nice but I'm wondering if it make sense to spend that much on field display when you're not really dealing with final color in the field. I like the rugged chassis build on this series but do you need it for just framing/focus confirmation?

Mitch, thanks for the tip on the price reductions on this monitor. I put a request for a quote in on your site. Let me know if you want to send a contact my way to get a kit (monitor, case, AB adaptor, stand & spud)

Thanks.

Waveform, Vector and 3D LUT's are a nice addition along with the better refresh rates but I'm with you Mark, not really 100% necessary for most field use. These features are more critical for HD cameras than RED but I am curious how build 16 is going to impact our set monitoring. Whether or not build 16 is closer if not dead on accurate to the final image through SDI most of these new monitoring features aren't necessary in most scenarios.

By the way, does anyone make field cases for the Panny 1700 that is the type of case that you remove the front of the case and it's ready to be put on a c-stand? I thought I saw something like that at NAB this year, but I don't remember the maker.

The one I'm talking about is a hard case with removable front...then, put on a stand and plug in and you're ready to go. I'd love to have something this easy, though I guess it would limit how much access you'd have to the back of the unit for batteries & cables...

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Kevin
