Does RED have a MAC address or something similar?

Does RED have a MAC address or similar finger print built in the hardware, visible in metafiles? We have all red about stolen cameras, and it will be more (you know why!). If it has it should good to know!

If not - could it be an option in future firmware?

From the Ops Guide:

Press the On/Off switch to power the camera. The rear status display will illuminate, and after
approximately 60 seconds it will display the camera PIN, firmware build and firmware version.

The P.I.N is a unique product identification number in the format ABC_123_XYZ. This code is
included in the metadata recorded with each image. The PIN provides RED with tracking data
for customer service and assistance in authenticating legal ownership of the camera.

It is part of the meta-data, but as of yet it does not "do" anything.

Could be could if for example RedAlert would sync with a on-line database and show a little warning whenever a footage from a "stolen" camera shows up.

Here in Taiwan, home insurance is still in it's infancy and it's a real worry of mine as my date with RED nears. The local way is, prison bars over every door and window! Put yourself behind bars with no way out and then fry when there's a fire. (Unreal bi-weekly news footage!) Things are moving foreward, though... slowly. This place is surreal....

Nevertheless, an extra access/user code which allows/inhibits the camera from functioning upon start-up would be cool. A second of inconvenience for the life of the camera metadata-security-feeling... Yea! No code? POWER DOWN! RED ALERT! FIRE CHIEF! ;>)

Requiring a password has been discussed, the problem is that all such measures have a drawback of possibly preventing legitimate use when someone forgets the password, etc. Even a slight possibility of a legitimate user being locked out is very unpopular.

I have absolutely no problem with entering a bit of info to who I am in order to access the privilege of using my cam. How many company/discount cards are in my pocket at any given time? How many PIN numbers are floating around in my bloated noggin? Nowadays, why would anyone gripe about extra security? It's the norm and in fact, a right of passage! Line up, and kick thieves in the balls!
