  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

R3D Data Manager not answering

I bought it ok. Took a few days for the initial response though. If you pm me I'll give you another direct email ( not sure if it's meant to be public or not).
Great software by the way- really good to be able to set it up and walk away. The whole checksum thing really impresses the worry wart producers...

We bought it too with no problems but it is painfully slow. We ended up using rsync (free) which also does checksum copies and is almost as fast as the finder.

I’m using this version: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16814 with great success.

Once installed, in the terminal type:

rsync -ac --progress <source> <destination>

(letter ‘a’ means archival copy, ‘c’ means checksum and progress is for visual feedback).

We have a text clipping with the command on the desktop that we drag to the shell, then drag the red mag, the destination volume, press enter and that’s it.

Just a little advice: you can substitute the "text clipping cut&paste" with an alias or a shell script.
I just tried this and it works.
Code:
alias redcopy="rsync -ac --progress"
Now just type redcopy, drag source and destiny and push enter. Much easier to remember and use.

That command just created a temporal alias. To create a permanent one, copy the code into a plain text file and save it as a file named .profile in your user directory.

Unix is cool!
 
Has anyone succeded buying this software?
I paid like 2 weeks ago, i have send emails to them but i get no answer from anyone there.

Thanks for the comments. The next version we are about to release contains a queue system - so you can queue up a bunch of RED Media and again, walk away. :)

Rsync wont provide peace of mind for the following reasons:

- It doesnt verify the initial source as readable
- It doesnt provide any mechanism for making sure you are not overwriting old/new material
- It doesnt provide any way to ensure that later on you still have valid media
- It doesnt live up to bond company standards

And with our new version, it doesnt provide a way to queue up RED Media.

MD5 checksums are bound by the speed of your pipe (firewire, sata, etc... ) and the speed of your computer. MD5 is simply a addition of all the ones and zeros in a file - so if your computer cant read it fast, it will seem to be slow. However, using faster pipes means faster MD5 sums.

MD5 sums are a industry standard, so messing around with that would compromise the ability of our product to ensure cross platform and future compatibility.

So as long as you have a valid credit card (some people have not), then there is no reason why you should not have your key at this moment.

Just to say that I am incredibly happy we have this software. A small fee for a major peace of mind and it works great. One tiny niggle: if one of the target copy drives doesn't have enough space, the software doesn't report that: it just won't start the copy. But other than that, it is really good to hit the button and wander back to the set, knowing that if you come back and see a big green tick you can rest easy.

A feature request: when occasionally a few files fail checksumming after copy, is there a way of redoing just those files to another folder rather than the whole drive? I can't seem to do that.

Actually, right now, if you just delete the RDC folders that are reported as failing in the destinations, then change the "If RDC folder exists" option to "Ignore all", it will copy only the RDC folders that dont exist, i.e. the ones you deleted.

What kind and frequency of errors are being identifed by the software?
WHta course of action do you hten take?

I have two network TV shows using this software everyday to do their downloads. The only time they see errors is when someone screws up - unplugs a drive or shuts it down too early. In that case, the software pops up a dialog with a big red X letting you know something happened.

I have yet to have footage fail an MD5 checksum.
