  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Zeiss Superspeeds

One note for people trying out the B'speeds: The PL adapters on them are very rarely a good match for the RED. I've used RED's that were pre redesign of the mount AND after, both had an issue with some PL adapters.

The fillet on the adapter between the flange surface and the rear protrusion into the camera is to long and doesn't allow the lens to seat perfectly. This can be fixed with a little machining of the adapter.

It could explain why perfectly collimated B'speeds are coming up wrong on the Red.

We've found the chamfer width on the Red PL mount to different from Arri's PL mount. Enough that the Bayo-PL mount adapters we've tried end up with a little play in them.

But maybe there are differences in Red's PL mounts (one generation to the next) that account for why Stuart's do work.

We are looking into whether we can come up with a solution - in the mean time, I'd just recommend you test it on your camera before you commit to buy an adapted lens set.

We've seen this as well, so apparently the bulk of the NY rental community confirms the issue. We had something similar with the early MOVIEtube adapters and had the manufacturer redesign their mount to a new spec to handle it.

Could be apples to oranges, but my ARRI bayo-to-PL works perfectly with my 9-50 Cooke and 10-100 Zeiss on the Red.
Maybe I just got lucky on that one?
Cheers,
Harry

Distagon 18mm and 35mm T1.4 For Sale / Price?

Distagon 18mm and 35mm T1.4 For Sale / Price?

The Zeiss Planar 50 and 85mm T1.4 lenses *definitely* are different optical designs:

1. The 50mm is marked f1.3 and the 85mm is marked f1.4 (they are both marked T1.4, probably quite optimistic on the 85mm).

2. The rear elements of the 50mm and 85mm f1.2 would not fit inside the Bayonet mount (37mm I.D. on Bayonet vs. 52mm on PL). And the 50mm and 85mm f1.2 have fixed rear elements.

I think that the nearly triangular iris when stopped down to T11 will produce more diffraction than the 7 blade iris on the Mk.II.

NOTE: Diffraction is not just an issue with the RED One - it is a law of optical physics. The
RED sensor will make it easier to see the loss of resolution though.

Wide open to about T5.6 they should look very similar. But I've never had the chance to test both types at the same time.

I've got Zeiss Distagons 18mm T1.4 and a 35mm T1.4 that are in pieces, that I will be selling in the near future. I'd like to get some opinions on the current price for T1.4's in fully refurbished condition (80mm front, focus gear, overhauled, PL mount).

Are you going to sell the Distagons in pieces?

Chuck,

What would that do to my reputation? No, the plan is to put them together in very good sellable condition. I would never put a lens out the shop door that I would not put on a camera and shoot with myself.

I have to say I'm not sure that I've got enough iris blades for both lenses. Originally the 18mm was going to be a dedicated test lens (for setting ground glass on film cameras or PL mount focus on RED One).

Just got done with some Illumina repairs yesterday and will be looking into the Mk.1 Distagons today. I've already got someone interested, but I need to get an idea of a fair price.

What reputation? LOL, only joshing. I asked because if you were to sell the lenses in pieces it might make it worth my while to run down to L.A. and use a friends shop to put them back together. An eighteen Distagon for a standard? My aren't we high and mighty. lol If I see any for sale I'll point them your way.

cheers,
