  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EVF question.

Good question...

Good question...

I would like to know if the EVF will offer the possibility to have a format option window so we can shoot various standard formats and then "crop" the image in post if needed...

Like 4/3, 1.33, 1.77, 1.85, 2.35, 16/9 and of course 2.1...

It may seem weird for some people in a sensor or else way, but it could be useful as some productions, demands or broadcast support might not require the definition or be suitable for the RED wide format... It could be useful to cheat and cook our own delivery aspect...

Which in any case can be done, but to avoid the tapep monitor and other rustique annoying tricks, a choice of frames could be great as a feature. And it is also probably pretty easy to do, as it is just a "mask" or digital "filter" that comes onscreen, like the other camera infos...

As suggested before, it would be great to have an option to overlay a graphic frame from the SD card. Thus everyone could make their own "ground glass" - and it would make it easier to match shots.

Maybe something for build 17?

Frame guides right now show up in both the EVF and the LCD. They are 2.4, 1.85, 4:3, 16:9 and Full (2:1 while in a 2:1 project). Custom frame guides are a request from long ago and I bet they'll show up someday. Seems like it might be cool to make up eyeline guides.

Does it switch from color to B/W as well for easy focusing or kind of EYES REST ....

Correct. Frame guides are generated by the camera, not the RED-EVF or LCD etc.

Just like the LCD, you can set it to monochrome or use the edge focus assist which is monochrome with focusing highlights.

Thanks, and I should have recieved my EVF in end of this month in HKG.

Any focus assits function like JVC PRoHD camera ? RED highlights on the Edge if it is Focus ?

Cheers,

Yes Stew. There is a function like that. You're getting better. That was a very understandable post.

Thanks for the response.

Thanks for the response.

Interesting that the camera generates the guide lines for the various formats. In that case if you are shooting 2.4:1 does that mean that you have to shoot full frame 16:9 ( chopping off top-n-bottom in post ) or can you select a format which only exposes the pixels needed? Thus reducing files sizes?

So 4K (16:9) = 4096 X 3112 | 4K (2.4:1) = 4096 X 1706

( Think I've got my figures right, near enough.)

Record size

Record size

Yes, 2:1 is a good choice for 2.40:1 presentations.

The disadvantage with only shooting the aspect ratio that you need, is you only get what you record. i.e shooting a bit bigger in one or both dimensions of the frame leaves the possibility of reframing or image stabilizing when in post.

You do need a modified post workflow to exploit that, but once solved it becomes a big advantage over video based acquisition systems.
