  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

16 and artifacting

I was wondering if with the new build there is still the issue of artifacting on hi detail shots like the bark on oak trees. I heard there is no longer the codec error issue and different noise structure, so I was hoping that that might be a possibility. It was an issue that has been brought up in the past and I just noticed it recently on something I shot. Can any alpha testers try that out.

I can post one. It's the same thing as a couple of other shots posted. I know one of the other ones was from Japan.

How do I upload a 4k tiff?

Here it is. You can see detail in some parts, and then other parts are all muddled. The leaves were moving pretty fast, but the lower branch is what is showing the artifacting. There are other people who had this issue as well but it was dismissed as out of focus. This is not out of focus. Some parts look good, some have compression issues.

Better in Build 16.

Thanks Jim. It was shot Redcode 28. Maybe 36 would have done better as well.

This issue seems discussion worthy and it also seems that it's limited to trees. I don't know why that is or if it is actually the case, but maybe there is some way to minimize this effect. It also seems that the trees in this circumstance were somewhat dark.

I hadn't seen it on my footage before as well. The weird thing is that it seems specific to trees. I've shot other high detail scenes and not had this issue.

The combination of RECODE 36 and Build 16 improve this dramatically. BTW, REDCODE 36 is default in Build 16.

Dose this combination mean we should see a dramatic improvement on projected images on large screens?

REDCODE 36 is better than REDCODE 28 in Build 15 for high detailed scenes. Build 16 is MUCH better than Build 15.

Please understand that you are recording 4K to a Compact Flash card. Miracles only go so far. The more detailed the scene, the more stressed the compression is that allows you to record to small media. On the other hand, this is an area where we are finding tremendous gain in experience and improvement. I think everyone will be relieved to see what this same image would look like on Build 16.

Hey Jim,

Does this mean that there is a possibility that the same scene recorded to RED RAID (for now on Build 15 at least) may potentially have a better image (less artifacting) due to the higher write speed of the drives (and therefore higher potential bitrate) ? Is it just that the codec is pushing the physical write speed of the Flash media ?

You can record REDCODE 36 to the 8GB CF as well as to RED-DRIVE. So no quality difference, unless you try REDCODE 36 at 4K 16:9.

Then yes, RED-DRIVE has the quality advantage as CF can only support REDCODE 28 at 4K 16:9.
