First off, let me say that this is a workflow test. This is from footage of a spec watch commercial I shot with Red One and Cooke S2/3 lenses. I am not an editor and threw it together rather quickly so I can test the workflow. I am not a colorist but know my way around color. The grade is not refined. I just wanted to see what a MacBook Pro can do with a 50-shot project around 3 mins...
This is not the final product or the vision of the director but I thought I'd share.

Here's the workflow used:
1. Shoot Red to Harddrive
2. Download to Firewire Drive
3. Import into FCP through L&C Plugin
4. Let it render overnight
5. Cut in FCP
6. Export XML from FCP
7. Export EDL from FCP
8. Convert XML in Crimson
9. Import into Redcine, rough color correction
10. Output to 2K DPX file sequence
11. Import DPX sequence directly into Apple Color using the EDL created in 7. and pointing to the DPX sequence folder instead of Original ProRes files
12. Color Correct in Color
13. Render in color to Apple ProRes 2K file
14. Send to FCP
15. Output to Quicktime

Here's the hardware used:
-Red One & Cooke S2/3 lenses
-MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2Duo Processor, 4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, GeForce8600M GT Graphics Card
-Panasonic BT-LH as Grading Monitor through Matrox MXO

Software:
-FCP 6.0.3
-Apple Color 1.0.3
-Crimson
-Redcine
-Red Log and Transfer Plug In for FCP

Can't wait to get my camera, I have everything else already....

EVF was great, my 1st A.C. bailed on me (paying gig) and I had to pull by eye from the EVF...

Florian, you've got a real atmosphere going there in those images! Thanks for sharing.

Florian, Those are very beautiful images you have captured. I normally don't post about images on this forum, but I was compelled to do so this time. Thanks for posting.

Amazing, easily some of my favorite grabs posted on this site. Great work, dude.

really nice florian...
it is beautiful...

can you talk a little about the light...

---btw. that crimson works with log and transger plug in rocks...didint tested it yet.

thanks for the compliments.

It was very simply lit:

I hung 4 Large China Balls (Ikea, 5$ each) with 500W Photoflood Bulbs over and in between the 2 existing chandelliers using the chandelliers' chains as support and skirted it with duvateen to keep it off the walls. There is a little frontal fill coming in from camera left from a Kino Flo. There is a 2K Fresnel hitting the wall behind the glass partition and a 1K Open Face hitting the center of the back wall from low hidden behind the partition. The rest of the lighting was accomplished from 1 high window at the back third of the room on the right side (you can see it in the 8mm wide shot). We had a: Source 4 Leko with 36 Degree lens and 1/4 CTB backlighting the dancers, a 2K Fresnel lighting the bar and a 1K Fresnel bringing up the band.

All powered from house power. We had a 4x4 Kino to float around and tweak close ups.

We filled the room with smoke via a DF-50 Fogger.

Florian! If you really were pulling focus as you operated, I am blown away at some of those tracking shots and racks. That shows a very experienced opperator. Looks great to.

I am not used to pull my own focus except in documentary type work. I guess I had a lot of practice this winter, I did a 5 week documentary in Africa where I pulled my own focus handheld with an HVX200 and a P&S Technik with Nikon lenses...

This was much easier since we were on a dolly and I could use preset "fingermarks" A and B and just feel myself between the two points on the movement. ("fingermarks: = adjust the mark tab on the FF where you can feel it at the stop B mark, go back to A on the dolly, leaving your hand on the FF at all times, find eye focus at A and go)

The EFV helped tremendously since it really helps you to hone in and focus only on the image. It is the best electronic viewfinder that I have experienced in my career.

thanks for the compliments.

simple and beautiful, you have the talent...

florian, regarding your workflow...
did you exported your dpx files as pdlog or redlog...
and how did you manage LUTs in Color, relating the MXO?

or was it simpler?

Kaya,

I used Rec709 but will test RedLog next. I didn't use a LUT but clicked the setting "ignore DPX header in Color".

I used a color bar from the Matrox setup and calibrated my monitor to that. In fact I didn't need to do anything to the settings I had it matched earlier to the camera's color bars and it was dead on coming out of the Matrox.

I don't know much about the advantages of specific color spaces, but I would be happy to learn from someone with more experience and knowledge in that field...
