New ET EVF tube mount - issues

I have a question that's a bit off topic but I don't have my camera yet and haven't seen many pics of the EVF mounted on the camera.

Can the Element Technica mount be used lower down on the side of the camera for handheld work? How would it be attached?

Sorry Weirdcrew

Sorry Weirdcrew

Hi Weirdcrew,

I am bummed to hear you have tried to contact us without any response. We are crazy busy but always make a point to answer all e-mails. I'm fairly used to finding all sorts of items that have mistakenly been filtered into the junk e-mail folder. I just did a search through all the e-mail folders and still don't see you. I would suggest you try again but something is obviously going wrong. We're pretty easy to reach here at the shop (323.641.7327) but that is an overseas call for you. You can also send a PM via this forum as well. Finally, using the contact submission page on our site will let you contact several of us at once including my partner, Hector Ortega or our Technical Applications guy, Chris Burket. http://www.elementtechnica.com/contact/

Anyhow, I'm here now and have included a photo of the production version of our RED handle riser. We originally designed the riser to create more clearance between the handle and the cheeseplate as well as to put the handle at a height similar to that of a 435 or the Hollywood Handle from Panavision. As we developed the newer interface for the EVF mount we found the riser to be helpful there as well.

HarryClark,
Be careful with the handle mount that has been tightened to the point of closing the gap by compressing the rubber handle grip. Screw threads give you a great deal of leverage and allow you to generate an amazing amount of force. If any of the components are under enough strain and one of them encounters even a moderate load... well, something's gonna give.

Don't worry I was not trying to pick at you. Your answering now so all is forgotten. Especially if we can send me a couple asap

I've e-mailed you so you should have that e-mail by now. I would be eternal grateful if you could in your answer, include me on a few of the other things your up to. Just heard that you guys are doing a hot swap etc??? It's a shame I'm not on the right side of the ocean so I can be updated on these things :waaa:

Hi Stephen,

Thank you for posting. Specifically how high does the riser raise the handle?

My concern here is that if I use the riser I'll have to remove the handle everytime I put my Red away in its case. I can leave the handle on now as it is, but it's already close to being too tall to fit in the case.

Hi Harky,

The risers are 2" tall. You probably will need to remove them if it is already close.

The good news is that if you leave the RED handle and extension mounted to the risers, you won't need to keep track of hardware as we use 1/4-20 captive SS fasteners.

The risers are 2" tall. .

Note sure why people use the extension front handle anyway...just looks like something that is often off the camera's centre of gravity and that may slip out of your hand easier.
But if you need it why not place a .5cm space under the two handles mounts with slightly longer screws.

Front handle extension has been very useful here with a larger lens mounted like the Cooke 18-100 as I've set up some configs that put the front handle piece right about the CoG.

But I don't like the front handle extension. Have to be careful not to torque on it when picking up the camera or maneuvering as it can start to un-screw itself. It really needs a way to be securely fastened or locked to prevent this.

Hey, Stephen... Are the 2" handle risers readily available yet? Don't see them in the store, would like to buy them. I guess I can call on monday.

EVF Mount; Pricing and Options

EVF Mount; Pricing and Options

We introduced an EVF Mounting/Positioning system that included a true cine-style clutch as well as vertical and telescopic linear adjustability. The original production version contained more than 25 CNC mill or CNC lathe parts as well as hand finishing and assembly by a skilled technician. Had we designed and fabricated the EVF Mount for the traditional cine-market it would be a good value at $2500. By following RED's lead in terms of pricing we offered the first generation at $960.

This original production version offered more configurability than any professional EVF Mount ever and it did not interfere with the RED top handle. In certain positions it did interfere with the top left rod or the PL mount locking tabs. It was apparent that our customers wanted more adjustability so we went to work on the current mounting interface that allows side to side adjustment as well as quick fore/aft positioning. The new interface (5 additional CNC machined parts) was priced at a very reasonable $230. We offered it at no cost to the original EVF Mount customers in an effort to be generous.

While the new interface added a lot of functionality to the EVF Mount it did interfere with certain top handle configurations. One of our solutions for this is a top handle riser. The riser was conceived to increase the clearance between the cheeseplate and the RED top handle as well as to put the handle at a height closer to that of many film cameras. Since the riser compliments two of our products we priced it a very fair $60.

We are very proud of our product line and make no apologies for our pricing. The EVF Mount is a great piece of gear but using it comes at a price. Choosing any particular piece of equipment often means eliminating something else or modifying how you use it. If you want to by our EVF mount then be aware that we have included everything we consider to be essential which includes the new horizontal interface. The price is $1190. As a non-essential option we offer a handle riser for the RED top handle. It is priced at $60. Another non-essential option is our soon to be released EVF extension with Arri leveler compatibility for the geared head operators.

Lots of possible configurations and lots of choices.

That's strange...mine fits fine.

BYW- Why are you using both the Quickplate and Cradle?
we had a faulty battery plate on our cradle - hence the use of the quick plate at the moment. it's actually turned out to be really useful having both. if we need to go steadicam/handheld and shoot with CF cards it's just a matter of sliding off the cradle and away you go....

Hi Stephen...
Good advice on the load factor.
There is a small spacer? Not the 2" riser? If so, I'll need that. I've spec'ed an A&J case that will no be tall enough if I get the 2" riser.
Please advise what I need to do to get the small spacer.
I have sent an email as well.
Cheers,
Harry

FWIW,
I also think that the extension is a must-have. The CG is far in front of the camera with heavier zooms.
Cheers,
Harry

All of Stephens gear is top notch, and priced more than fairly. I hope he is making money so we will continue to see more goodies. The EVF mount is a must have option for anyone with a viewfinder...as well is all his products, and yes even at $2500 it would be a bargain.

Both of our Reds will be fully outfitted with ET gear.

Thanks for the great products!

Stephen's gear is extremely good value for money... I'm a very cost aware buyer, but have a basic position with ET that whatever they make I'll buy...

regards

Michael

PS Fred.. I'm sure that some e-craziness must have happened as Stephen (despite being crazy busy) does always get back and help.

The hallmark of Element Technica Products

The hallmark of Element Technica Products

Much worse, in my view, is the razor-sharp edges of the locking levers, a hallmark of ET products

We've been puzzling over this one. If there are any edges on any of the components that make up our products that could be described as razor sharp, then something is wrong. Please contact us right away and we will take care of you.

If this was an exaggeration then we ask that you please consider that this is a public forum. As hard as we try to ensure that every item that ships will meet our high standards, mistakes do happen. If something doesn't seem right, give us a call and we will fix it.

BTW To Greg and Michael, thanks for the words of support. I would however like to point out that I am only half of Element Technica and none of our products would exist without my partner, Hector Ortega. All designs are the result of our collaborative efforts as well as the efforts of the team we've assembled.

Stephen,

please try to ignore those who would use the forum as a passive aggressive attack. We all know better.

I own your plate, and your EVF mount. They are both top notch. And as for razor sharp edges... That's foolish.

Jay

I have dealt with Stephen on the phone and I can say for certain, that Stephen went out of his way to ensure I was a happy customer, and I am very very happy. Thanks to Stephen and all the staff at Element Technica for their great products and great customer service.

Respectfully

I found the "razor sharp" comment very odd as well. I have the EVF mount on my camera right now and none of it is anywhere close to sharp. Loving all the ET stuff Hector and Stephen.

There will be full video reviews up on www.finnerknowsbest.com showcasing the entire ET line up along with 3 special pre-release products. Look for this either this week or next.

Don't worry they've got back to me

I got to order with them, unfortunately I've already ordered some gear (from others) that they also have in the making. If I've known I would most probably have waited.

I agree with all of you that this is a company with top quality gear that should be on every RED owners list.

By the way. Anyone who has an opinion between RED CF rods and ET's alu? I'm just about to order for 2 more RED's and are not sure which way to go?

Thanks,

Fredrik
