Micro Redrock offers a basic filterset consisting of
* 1 4x5.65" ND 0.6 neutral density filter
* 1 4x5.65" ND 0.6 graduated neutral density filter
* 1 4x5.65" circular polarizing filter
Heard nothing about them here yet... Has anybody seen them on NAB or have some more information?

I know stacking the pancros is bad because of mirror but can you put a .3 on and then stack standard nd's behind it? or does the ir filter rate change with each nd level? Sorry for the hijack but hopefully, others are after the same and it becomes relevant.

I´m not so happy with a 4 x 5,65 pola, on wider lenses if you have to use it angeled, i may not cover the whole area, i prefer square sized polas. Same for grads, a 5,65x5,65 is more usable than a 4x5,65. And with the compatibility of the Redrockmicro Mattebox with MB20 Filterstages, I´m considering getting 5,65x5,65 filterstages and go for square filters on grads and polas

That's what I'll be doing as well.

IMO, the RED edition of the RR mattebox really should include 5.65x5.65 filter stages and a 138mm rear stage option. All should / will be available in the future, it's just a matter of what is available now.

Hi folks

Regarding the Redrock microFilters and the IR discussion, we are in the testing phase, and it looks like we may offer one or both of these options: a standalone hot mirror to put in front of the filters, and/or cut IR ND filters. We should know more from testing around cinegear as to the relative performance of each approach.

Regarding requests for additional filter tray sizes, etc. yep we have all those in our request queue.

Thanks

Brian

What is the affect of infrared on the red sensor?

The RRMicroFilters have a release date of July 7th. Has anyone bought them, received them and have an opinion yet?

The more I've read on filters, the more unsure I've become. If this filter set is unsuitable for the RED ONE, can we cancel that part of our order, Brian?

Johann

The microFilters have been very well received from what we've seen. Are you unsure of filters in general, or of microFilters?

Yes of course you can cancel part of your order. I HIGHLY recommend you do so before it ships since returns create more effort for you and us. You can always order them later if you want.

Brian

Dear Brian,

Thanks. I haven't heard any feedback on the performance of your filters in particular, but have heard conflicting reviews and issues with other brands, especially when dealing with the higher IRND and mirror filters, which are not in your set, anyways.

Can you see the confusion? ;>) I want your set, as they offer a basic 'light' filter kit at a very reasonable price. You say they're well received but I haven't heard a peep on the boards.

Johan

If you check other boards, you will get some feedback on our filters. They are every bit as good as any other filter out there, and you understand we are not currently offering an IR option. If you are the kind who likes to wait for feedback, then again I'd recommend removing them from your order and you can always order later. We are in the process of releasing an IR cut filter that would sit in front of any filtration. Availiability and price TBD, but it will be a very pleasing price, as you've seen with our other filters.

B

Absolutely. But I've checked other boards; or do you mean outside of heaven?....

I believe the quality of your filters are high, that's why I ordered them.

BTW, thanks for the heads-up on the new product! :>) You're cool, man!

I saw a post recently from dxmetal over at dvxuser.com and he also has a blog writeup/review of them.

you can also take a look at our forums at www.redrockmicro.com/forum and post up a question to see how people like them there. More folks there who own 'em.

Brian

Specific to RED ONE use? (My try at your dvx link comes up with a "?")....

Actually, I didn't know anyone had the filters yet!

Just as a note a couple of weeks ago I stacked a .9 & .6 ND with no issues as far as blacks went. It seems like some people are having more issues with IR than others and I can't figure out why...

Matthew, lots of factors effect IR transmission. Simply stacking NDs in front of the camera lens is not going to simply make you see IR effects. As with the visible spectrum, IR wavelengths behave differently with different glass. You will see more IR transmitted through faster primes with fewer elements than through a larger zoom. IR wavelengths also don't travel as well as visible spectrum or UV waves and are easier to block. IR is mostly emitted by heat sources and is effectively blocked or scattered by water and our atmosphere. We actually don't get a huge amount of IR from sunlight (due to our atmosphere), but rather from heat generated by objects that are heated by the sun.

With a bigger lens like my Cooke 18-100, I have not been able to duplicate many of the IR effects shown in Evin's tests like black nylon appearing purple, etc.. But with that lens, I have seen other anomalies though, like odd halos and certain effects similar to chromatic aberration or purple fringing, but without the normal color casts. It's as if the camera is picking up IR that isn't in proper registration with the other wavelengths. Not hard to believe considering it's hard enough to keep R, G and B in line with one another and they're not accounting for wavelengths lower than RED to fall in line as well when designing the lens.

I shoot most of the time outdoors with available light and often in the middle of the day. It's not uncommon for me to have NDs of 1.5 to 1.8 in front of the camera. I've done 2.4 (a full 8 stops) before by stacking a 1.5 with a .9. And did pick up various image artifacts that are likely to be caused by IR, but didn't see much, if any, color shifting other than what one would expect from such heavy ND to begin with.

Aside from ND's in intense sun-drenched subjects in sweltering heat, I've also tried some other tests, not specifically for IR, but ones that show possible IR effects. Got some interesting results from two subjects, but not surprising as these are subjects that can often make IR night-vision gear go bonkers. First one was some rock outcroppings that are primarily composed of iron. It was 102 degrees F about 1:30PM and the surface temp on the rocks could literally cook an egg. Got really strange halos and desaturated color on the rocks. These formations appear to "glow" when viewed with IR imaging systems, even at night as they retain lots of heat. But I'm not sure how much was IR induced, there were quite a few compression and codec errors in there too... (build 15). The other subject was a helicopter touching down in sandy dirt at night. Very low light, would have to expose in REDCINE / RA at 2000 ASA to get something close to right. When exposed at 500 ASA got some odd noise and color casting that mimicked the IR flare of static in the rotor vortex. Very similar to the effect one sees in most IR night-vision systems under the same conditions, only more of a faint ghost of the effect with RED. I have never shot the same situation with any other digital camera system, so I don't have a way to compare. I wish I could post an image from this one, but I'm not allowed. Shot just last week with Build 16 3.2.4.

compatibility of the Redrockmicro Mattebox with MB20 Filterstages

compatibility of the Redrockmicro Mattebox with MB20 Filterstages

...
And with the compatibility of the Redrockmicro Mattebox with MB20 Filterstages...

Are you sure about this ?

Where does this info come from ?

This is good news. I need real 4x4 filter stages. The dual 4x5.65 and 4x4 RedRock filter stages are nice, but really not practical in the real world. Where can I order a couple 4x4 Arri MB20 filter stages ?

Cheers,
Damien
