Hi everybody:biggrin: ,

I read a lot here the last months…great forum… still have some questions, since I will have to finalise my order next month or so…
So here is my first post on this forum, and some questions to experienced RED ONE users:

1) I want to use the camera for Documentaries… I know there is the critical long boot up time. (REAYLLY NEED THE SLEEP MODE SOON - PLEASE) It’s been said by Jarred that it is worked on the option to change batteries without the need to power down the Camera... Is RED working on this or do I have to look for other offers?

2) Since I will need a lot of batteries than, I need some advice here too… Should I go this he RED bricks or look for the other options, AB offers ect.? What is your advice? I know that information about low battery status will not show up, if I use the for example the AB mount… will this change, are they working on it? Is it low battery status information “really” that important? Are there workarounds?

3) There is the SWAP PACK by actionproducts.ch . What do you think of this option? Has anyone worked with it?

4) I want to use the REDdrive(raid). Are there other options to mount the drive on the camera other than with the RED cradle? I know there are quid a few other options for the battery, but for the drive?

5) “Base production Pack” has been criticised by quid a lot of users…shoulder dovetail, Bottom plate, RED handles… what is the bottom-line for this parts? Would you go for it again?

6) I own a “Sachtler caddy” tripod. It comes with a 8cm x 6,5cm bottom quick release plate. Will this plate be strong enough to fasten the camera tight enough?

Thanks for any advice
Chris

All of your answers can be found here, which is where this post should be:

To answer your specific questions:
1. not currently available (but coming soon fron ET, Red and others)...btw boot time is less than 90 seconds...not quite "critical long"

2. If you dont currently own any battery system, I would recommend going with Red batteries and charger. They are much lighter than AB and cost less.Plus you get info in the viewfinder/lcd.

3. not shipping yet, cost about $800. They are taking orders. Search and you will find alternatives from Anton Bauer that are cheaper.

4. several, again a quick search will find options from Ugrip, and others.

5. a bargain...get it.

6. yes, but you might also wat to get the Red bottom cheese plate.

NOTE REGARDING #5 and 6:
This has been discussed to death on this forum. Another alternative is the Arri base and ET products. The decision is based on your budget. The Arri base is superior, but cost more.

(sorry, I didn't realize Greg had posted before me, but here is my post anyway)

Hi Burger,

Welcome to the forum! I hope we can help you and perhaps learn from you in the future.

I am probably not going to be much help since I am still new to the camera and haven't heard the latest plans from Red (like sleep mode) but I do have these comments.

When shooting guerilla style, multiple locations from a van, our CA powers up the camera before carrying it to the tripod. By the time it is latched on, balanced, and pointing in the right direction, it is usually about done booting. It is small comfort, I know, but it's working for us.

We use a Sachtler Video 25 head with the release plate you are talking about. That is our method of attaching the camera to the head and it seems to work just fine. We consider it a temporary solution, though until we get some of the other parts we are waiting for.

I hope someone else will cover your other questions.

Regards, and again, welcome.

Phil

Hi Burger,

Talk to the guys at Element Technica - They are working on a hot-swap battery plate and Have a really cool red-drive shock mount that's very trick and light.

They also have a great hand held rig.

The Sachtler Caddy - which I think is like a Video 18 ? should be good if you are using reasonably compact lenses.

Hi Matt,
I must have missed this one...
I didn't find any reference to it on their website neither.
Do you have a link or some more info about this ET red drive shock mount ?
I'd be very interested in such a mount.

Thanks,
Nils.

It's extremely cool, the drive is suspended on rubber bushings, around a minimal aluminum frame. 5 oz ! Bolts to top plate or clamps on to 19mm / 15mm rod. - maybe Steven would post a picture of it?.... Those guys are super modest. Much better than the U-Grip one I think...

Like other documentary and wild life Filmmakers have pointed out here before me, the long boot time is critical. Since we want to operate the camera without a CA and need to react quick seep mode has to come for us…

But I guess most of the RED user are not so pushing for this feature since the do different kind of shootings…

Elementtechnica seems to be a great company. I guess for a “red-drive shock mount” and a “hot-swap battery plate” seems to be also enough demands... Let´s wait what they come up with… Right now on there webpage nothing is announced …

Thanks for your answer… Sachtler caddy and Video 25 / Video 18 plate should behave the same… so I will give it a try

5. a bargain...get it.

I see, I would get it for a good price. But, if I end up getting all the stuff form Urip and Elementtechnica the “Base production Pack” is not anymore such a bargain…

I´m just wondering, it seems to me at the end, a lot of RED users are not really satisfied with the RED accessories… But I really can´t tell…

Burger I guarantee you will be ecstatic with the Element Technica gear.

its still in development, I was told it would be available soon.

Have one sitting on my desk right now along with a few other new treats. Doing beta testing and will have a full video review of these and the rest Element technica line up along with a few other highly coveted pre-release products from some other companies (some of the pre-releases are currently the first product and only one currently produced.)

Look for full video and written reviews of these products in a week to week and a half on www.finnerknowsbest.com

Keep your eyes open because over the next month there are going to be a bunch of review/test/tutorial video's going up on www.finnerknowsbest.com I will also post here as they go up

digitalfx what do you think about this battery option: C4-SM4010-150WH Package

Never used them...though I have a friend who uses them on his Varicam and he is happy.

Thats why I said, the decision is really based on your budget and how you shoot. Dont expect a stock answer to work for you. For the money, there is nothing wrong with the Red accessories.

I'm under the impression that most of the issues with the production pack have gone away--RED changed their manufacturing process. Things seem to fit and look properly now.

Complaints have certainly dried up on the forum, if that's any indication.
