Designed by Dan Sasaki, these two high quality zooms weigh less than 2 lbs. and are made with Nikon glass.

Focal Length:
17.5mm -- 35mm T 2.8 CF 1.5’
27mm -- 68mm T 2.8 CF 3’

Available in Panavision or PL mounts, these versatile zooms are perfect for Steadicam rigs, remote heads or even normal studio use.

Anyone no anything about these two Lens. The Good, The Bad, The Lenses!

Most interesting. I understood Mr. Sasaki had joined up with A&S Precision, and was designing anamorphic lenses for Dalsa. Where did you find these, and are they available to purchase?

I have no doubt they are terrific lenses if Dan designed them.

I would think these are of superb quality if Dan did indeed design them. When he was at panavision, he would do all sorts of custom things to lenses depending on the job. He is truely an expert in the field of optics and machining.

I'm curious too. Those look like just the right size for doing handheld work.

So they are rehoused Nikon 17-35mm and 28-70mm (with more accurate focal length spec)?

The 17-35 looks similar to the one made by vantage films. Who told you that Dan designed them? Did he design them for Panavision?

Geofilms has them for rent, not for sale. Sounds like a cool company if you need to rent these lenses, a Red, or any other gear. Give them a call.

I'd love to have theses. I just shot some 2nd unit photography for a moderately large feature film using a 17-35mm Nikkor and the Red Nikon mount. The images are stunning. It would be awesome to have this in a proper PL mount.

Yeah, the 17-35 is awesome with the Red. The mechanics are the only problem.

Getting the 17-35 rehoused in PL mount would be rather expensive I would think. There was a thread about this a while back if I remember correctly.

I guess it'll be a moot point when the Birger ships.

what about the nikon 14-24; I shoot with this lens on my D3 and 14mm @ 2.8 mil was so sharp edge to edge. Kinda made the 17-35 look soft, If it wasn't a G lens I'd buy it today but I'm worried about how long till the Birger ships.

I don't agree. I've been going back and forth about the Birger and the throught of regularly swapping the mount is just too scary, especially half a world away from RED and my tendency to strip screws, even when being careful...

I'm hesitant to commit 100% to non P/L so I'm in a hard place.

If I could find P/L mount Nikons at a reasonable price, to compliment my other lenses, I would be ecstatic!

I have had a discussion with Erik about the swap. He said it can be done in about 15-20 minutes. I too am curious to see how practical it is. Just to give you an example, on a shoot the other day the production had decided to go with Nikons using the Red Nikon Mount. But at the last moment, as in when I arrived, they had a set of Zeiss cine lenses. They wanted to compare a bit. So I popped on some of the Nikons and then I swapped out the mount for the PL and we took a look at those. Swap took about 10 minutes. Not difficult at all. But, I will have to see the Birger mount swap in action in order to decide whether it will be practical enough for me. I can not be locked into one mount, so this is a big issue for me. If it's not so bad, then I'm really looking forward to trying it.

Hey Steve,
Do you need to collimate/calibrate between the mounts? I'm a novice when it comes to the mechanics of mounts and lenses and this is something I would want to avoid.

If it's easy, and stripping isn't a big risk, I would LOVE to explore the RED Nikon mount. The thought of having a sweet set of Nikons, the RED 18-50, and then rent anything else I need as it comes up, is very tempting indeed.

The mounts have not caused me any issues yet in terms of backfocus. So far, they have been on after each swap. With the Birger mount you are removing the backfocus collar so I can't comment yet on how that will affect things. But in terms of Nikon mount, just do a backfocus check when you swap back and forth and make sure everything is still in alignment.

I spoke with my Rep Dan today and he mentioned after some practice it only takes about 5 minutes to swap out the RED nikon mount, not bad at all. Very interested...anyone using it or point me to a thread about the RED nikon mount?
